Key Notes

  • Villa Vie Odyssey has departed Sihanoukville without passengers after its residential world voyage was suspended.
  • Around 100 former passengers remained in Cambodia, according to a local official cited by Reuters.
  • The next destination and a restart date for the passenger voyage had not been officially confirmed in the November 4 reports.

Villa Vie Odyssey has left Cambodia without passengers after its operator suspended the residential world cruise, leaving former residents to work out where to live and travel next. Cambodian officials confirmed the departure on November 4, a week after the voyage was halted in Sihanoukville.

The Associated Press reported that only crew and other personnel were aboard when the ship departed. Its next destination and any plan to resume the passenger voyage remained unconfirmed.

Around 100 Former Passengers Remain in Cambodia

A local tourism official told Reuters that around 100 passengers remained in Cambodia, while others had largely flown to different destinations in the region. More than 200 people had been required to disembark when operations stopped.

Residents collected their remaining belongings from the vessel on November 3. Shirine Thomas, from North Carolina, told Reuters: “There are still many things on the ship that I wish I could take with me.”

Another passenger, retired Canadian teacher Mary Ann Demsar, said the owners had not made clear whether the voyage would continue. Villa Vie Residences did not respond to Reuters’ requests for comment for its departure report.

Some passengers and ship-tracking services indicated that Odyssey was heading towards Singapore. The destination remained unconfirmed in the official accounts cited by the reports.

Fuel Costs Triggered the Suspension

We covered the initial suspension after Villa Vie announced on October 27 that its operating model had come under severe financial pressure. The Florida-based company attributed the shortfall to sharply higher fuel costs in the regions where it was sailing.

In its official statement, Villa Vie estimated monthly fuel expense at $6,000–$8,000 on an equivalent per-cabin basis in parts of Asia, compared with a historical average of approximately $1,800. Those figures describe the company’s allocated fuel costs per cabin.

The operator said it had slowed the itinerary and spent longer in port to cut fuel consumption, but the savings were insufficient. It said it was helping residents coordinate disembarkation and identify temporary living arrangements while exploring financial restructuring.

The Voyage’s Future Remains Unsettled

Odyssey’s residential model allowed people to make the ship a long-term home through cabin purchases and extended stays. Losing access therefore disrupted living arrangements as well as a travel itinerary, with residents having to manage accommodation and possessions ashore.

Villa Vie’s October statement set out a 60-day effort to pursue restructuring and recapitalisation. At that point, no financing or transaction had been finalised, and the company said a successful outcome was uncertain. That timetable was a financing objective rather than a confirmed date to restart sailings.

As of the November 4 departure reports, residents had no confirmed date to return aboard or resume their journey. The ship is moving again, while the people who had been living on it remain dependent on separate arrangements ashore.
