Trunk Bay on St. John in the U.S. Virgin Islands has been named the best beach in the world for 2026, topping a new Beach.com ranking that combined expert recommendations, visitor reviews, water clarity, climate data and accessibility. The result gives the Caribbean another major win in global beach travel and places one of the U.S. Virgin Islands’ most photographed stretches of sand ahead of some of the world’s most famous coastlines.
The ranking began with a longlist of 226 beaches, built with input from 58 travel experts, content creators and local authorities. Researchers then analyzed more than 93,000 Google Maps reviews and used NASA MODIS-Aqua satellite data to evaluate water color and clarity. Climate conditions and proximity to major airports were also included, creating a list that tried to balance beauty with practical travel value.
Why Trunk Bay Took the Top Spot
Trunk Bay stood out because it combines postcard scenery with strong protection and visitor infrastructure. The beach sits inside Virgin Islands National Park, which helps preserve its white sand, turquoise water and mountain backdrop. It also offers an unusual feature for casual beachgoers: a 225-yard underwater snorkeling trail between the shoreline and Trunk Cay, with coral formations and marine life visible close to shore.
Beach.com praised Trunk Bay for having some of the bluest waters in the world and good weather conditions for about 10 months of the year. The beach also has useful amenities, including restrooms, rinse-off showers, a snack bar, picnic areas and rentals for chairs, umbrellas and snorkeling gear.
There is a $5 entrance fee for visitors aged 16 and older. Peak season runs from mid-December to mid-April, when the weather is at its best but crowds are heavier. Travelers hoping for a calmer experience are advised to arrive before 8 a.m., visit after 3 p.m. once cruise crowds thin, or consider April, May and June for fewer visitors.
