Slovenia Puts Wellbeing and the Carsus Trail at the Heart of Its 2027 Tourism Plans

Slovenia’s 2027 tourism plans pair wellbeing with the 103 km Carsus Trail, a six-stage route through the Karst landscape recovering from the 2022 wildfire.

Key Notes

  • Slovenia is presenting health and wellbeing as its central tourism communication theme for 2027 at WTM London.
  • The 103 km Carsus Trail links Slovenia and Italy over six stages and grew from recovery efforts after the 2022 Karst wildfire.
  • Some stages exceed 20 km, so walkers need good fitness even though the route is described as technically straightforward.

Slovenia is putting health and wellbeing at the centre of its tourism plans for 2027, with a cross-border walking route created after the 2022 Karst wildfire among its headline attractions. The 103 km Carsus Trail connects Slovenia and Italy across six stages, linking recovering landscapes with villages, vineyards and the Adriatic coast.

The Slovenian Tourist Board is presenting its 2027 plans at World Travel Market London, taking place November 3–5, alongside 20 destinations and tourism businesses. The aim is to broaden the country’s appeal beyond traditional spa holidays and encourage more visits outside the busiest summer months.

A Walking Route Shaped by Recovery

The Carsus Trail grew out of efforts to restore the Karst after the July 2022 fire. Its circular route has a heart-shaped outline and includes 24 educational points exploring the landscape, cultural heritage and environmental recovery.

For visitors, the route turns that restoration story into a journey through the region. It links the Vipava Valley with the Karst plateau and the coast, passing places where stone-built villages, farming and the legacy of earlier conflicts form part of the experience.

From the Vipava River to the Adriatic

The six-stage itinerary offers several distinct sections:

  • Miren to Renče: an introductory walk beside the Vipava River, through fields and villages.
  • Karst ridges and Cerje: a more varied climb with viewpoints and sites connected to the Walk of Peace.
  • Rihemberk and Štanjel: castle and village heritage along the inland stages.
  • Sistiana and the coast: the Rilke Trail, Duino Castle and the springs of the Timava River.
  • Lake Doberdò: natural scenery and First World War heritage before the loop returns to Miren.

Walkers can complete the full circuit or choose shorter sections. The regional tourism organisation describes it as a six-day route, giving travelers a framework for a walking holiday rather than a single sightseeing excursion.

Plan for Distance, Not Technical Climbing

Slovenia Outdoor describes the trail as technically straightforward but says good physical fitness is important: some stages exceed 20 km and include substantial climbing and descent. A gentle opening section should not be taken as a measure of every later day.

The organisation recommends spring and autumn in particular, while also presenting the trail as a year-round option that can work for shorter winter walking breaks. Weather, daylight and the length of individual stages should determine how much of the route to attempt.

Wellbeing Beyond the Spa

For Slovenia, the trail fits a wider tourism approach combining thermal and mineral waters with outdoor activity, local food and cultural experiences. Spa stays remain part of the offer, with walking and community-led experiences providing other ways to build a restorative trip.

The UK is an important audience for that message. The tourist board, citing Slovenia’s statistical office, reports 225,778 UK visitors in January–September 2026, up 32.5% year on year, and 598,138 overnight stays, an increase of 33.3%.
