Key Notes
- Murasu has weakened over Andhra Pradesh, but IMD warns heavy rain will continue after its November 3 landfall.
- IndiGo has identified affected airports, while South Coast Railway has issued fresh cancellations, diversions and delays.
- Travellers should check their exact flight or train and boarding station before leaving for an airport or railway station.
Cyclone Murasu has disrupted flights and train journeys in southern India after crossing the Andhra Pradesh coast near Ongole on November 3. The storm has weakened over land, but heavy rain and changing transport schedules continue to complicate travel through the region.
For passengers, the immediate issue is whether a particular flight or train is operating, rather than the cyclone’s classification alone. Airline advisories and fresh railway cancellations show why a booking needs to be checked again before setting out.
Murasu Weakens, but Heavy Rain Continues
The India Meteorological Department’s afternoon update, issued at 14:10 Indian Standard Time, confirmed Murasu had weakened from a severe cyclonic storm into a cyclonic storm.
At the bulletin’s 13:30 observation time, its centre was about 60 km north of Ongole and 80 km southwest of Vijayawada. Winds near the centre were 80–90 km/h, gusting to 100 km/h. IMD expected further weakening into a deep depression by midnight, while warning that heavy spells of rain would continue over south coastal Andhra Pradesh for another 12 hours.
The wider weather bulletin also forecast heavy to very heavy rain in parts of coastal Andhra Pradesh on November 4. That separates an improvement in wind strength from the continuing risk of waterlogged roads and difficult onward journeys.
Check Flights Before Leaving for the Airport
IndiGo’s cyclone travel advisory identifies operations to and from Rajahmundry, Vijayawada and Tirupati as affected. The airline says it is notifying customers using the mobile number supplied when booking.
A separate advisory on November 2 warned of disruption at Visakhapatnam. These notices do not establish that every flight at the named airports is cancelled or that the airports themselves are closed.
Travellers should check the airline’s flight status page and any booking messages before arranging an airport transfer. For connections booked separately, confirm both journeys before paying for replacement travel.
New Train Cancellations and Six-Hour Delays
Vijayawada Division of South Coast Railway issued a fresh service notice on November 3 covering cancellations, diversions and revised departures. Its Bulletin No. 11 lists:
- 17250 Kakinada Town–Tirupati: cancelled for the November 3 journey
- 12763 Tirupati–Secunderabad: cancelled for the November 3 journey
- 17638 Tiruchanur–Jalna: rescheduled by 360 minutes
- 18508 Tirupati–Visakhapatnam: rescheduled by 360 minutes
The same notice diverts 17405 Tirupati–Adilabad, skipping stops between Renigunta and Bolarum, and 16093 Chennai Central–Lucknow Junction, skipping stops between Gudur and Jammikunta. Passengers should check their boarding station as well as the train’s departure time.
The railway asks travellers to use the NTES service before starting their journey. Its latest notice is a specific update, rather than a complete list of every service affected by the cyclone.
What Travellers Should Do Next
Keep the booking reference and contact details for the airline, railway or travel agent available. Check whether a changed departure also affects a hotel check-in, connecting journey or pre-booked transfer, and confirm the terms before accepting an alternative.
For coastal stays and road transfers, follow local instructions and the latest IMD warnings. A flight resuming or a storm weakening does not by itself confirm that the road to an airport, station or hotel is clear.
