Spain’s travel and tourism sector is expected to contribute more than €269 billion to the economy in 2026, with the World Travel & Tourism Council raising its growth forecast to 4.1%. The upgraded outlook puts tourism ahead of both Spain’s wider economy and the European tourism sector.
WTTC’s latest forecast, released on October 23, lifts its earlier growth estimate of 3.7%. International business visitor spending is expected to rise by 8.1%, adding a corporate travel story to a destination often associated with beaches, islands and city breaks.
What the €269 Billion Figure Measures
The headline describes tourism’s total economic contribution. It is broader than the amount foreign visitors spend on hotels, meals or flights, and should not be read as a forecast for international tourism receipts.
WTTC produces its economic research with Oxford Economics. Its GDP measure includes direct, indirect and induced effects: activity in businesses serving travelers, the supply chains supporting them and the spending of people whose jobs depend on that activity.
A hotel booking can therefore support more than the hotel itself. Food suppliers and other services sit behind the stay, while workers’ household spending adds another layer. That wider accounting explains why tourism’s economic footprint is larger than a single visitor-spending total.
Growth Ahead of the Wider Economy
WTTC’s comparison puts Spain’s overall economic growth at 2.7% in 2026. It projects tourism growth of 3.1% across Europe and 2.5% globally, below Spain’s revised 4.1% rate. These remain forecasts rather than final results for the year.
The outlook follows a substantial 2025 base. WTTC estimates that travel and tourism contributed €259 billion, equivalent to 15.3% of Spain’s GDP, and supported 3.2 million jobs. Its estimate for international visitor spending that year is €115.8 billion, a separate measure from the sector’s total economic contribution.
We previously examined Spain’s 70 million arrivals milestone for the first eight months of 2026. Arrival counts, visitor expenditure and tourism’s contribution to GDP answer different questions; reading them together gives a fuller picture than treating them as interchangeable records.
The Next Challenge Is Managing Success
WTTC’s priorities extend beyond growth. They include spreading visitors across more destinations and seasons, protecting residents’ wellbeing, improving sustainability and investing in digital tools and workforce skills, particularly at smaller businesses.
Spain’s tourism authorities are also promoting a broader range of experiences. Turespaña’s tourism initiative with Paradores has highlighted nature, heritage, food and local communities as ways to distribute tourism’s benefits more widely.
For travelers, the national forecast is useful context rather than a prediction of what a particular holiday will cost. Compare accommodation and transport for your dates, and consider whether a less crowded destination or a different travel week would deliver the experience you want. A stronger tourism economy does not make every Spanish destination equally busy, or every itinerary equally expensive.
