Disney Cruise Line has offered the first glimpse of an entirely new class of ships that will begin entering service in 2029, giving the company greater flexibility to expand into destinations that cannot easily accommodate its largest vessels.

Three ships will form the new class as Disney continues one of the most aggressive expansion periods in its cruise history. By late 2030, the company expects its fleet to reach 13 vessels, creating significantly more capacity and allowing the brand to establish new departure points and itineraries around the world.

Disney has not yet revealed the names, passenger capacities, onboard attractions or specific routes for the upcoming ships. It has, however, confirmed one important design decision: they will be larger than the company’s classic vessels but smaller than the Wish-class ships.

The Disney Wonder carries about 2,713 passengers and measures roughly 84,000 gross tons, while Disney Wish accommodates around 4,000 guests at 144,000 gross tons. The next generation will sit somewhere between those two.

Disney Is Deliberately Moving Away From Bigger Ships

The decision contrasts with a broader cruise industry race toward increasingly large vessels.

Disney Experiences Chairman Thomas Mazloum said the size was chosen intentionally because not every ship can operate efficiently in every destination. A somewhat smaller footprint should allow the new vessels to reach ports that larger ships may struggle to access while still offering more space than Disney’s original ships.

That flexibility could become increasingly important as Disney Cruise Line grows beyond its traditional North American base.

The company has already expanded in Asia with Disney Adventure, which sails from Singapore, while Alaska and the U.S. West Coast are becoming more important parts of its network. Disney has also announced expanded San Diego operations and plans to send Disney Wish to Europe.

Disney Signature Experiences President Natacha Rafalski said the growing fleet will create new entry points for guests worldwide as the cruise line becomes increasingly global.

Disney Believe Arrives Before the New Class

Before the new vessels begin launching, Disney Cruise Line will introduce Disney Believe in late 2027 as the fourth ship in the Wish class.

The vessel will follow Disney Wish, Disney Treasure and Disney Destiny. Disney has begun revealing some of its visual themes, including a Moana statue in the Grand Hall, Tinker Bell and characters from Peter Pan on the bow, and Woody and Buzz Lightyear decorating the stern.

Disney says the ship will center on themes of believing in magic, family, nature and oneself.

The new three-ship class will represent the next chapter after Believe, although Disney is deliberately holding back details for now.

What is already clear is that the company does not see future growth as simply a matter of building bigger ships.

Instead, Disney is trying to create a fleet with enough variety to serve different regions, ports and audiences. As the company expands from eight ships today toward 13 by the end of the decade, that flexibility could become one of its most important competitive advantages.
