Anantara Plans a Tea Estate Retreat in the Darjeeling Hills for 2031
Anantara Retreat Darjeeling Hills is planned for 2031 on the working Tindharia Tea Estate, with 35 suites, 35 tented villas and a wellness focus.
Key Notes
- Anantara Retreat Darjeeling Hills is scheduled to open in 2031 at Tindharia Tea Estate.
- The planned accommodation comprises 35 suites and 35 tented villas.
- The working estate is about 40 km from Darjeeling town and 33 km from Bagdogra airport.
Anantara is bringing its Retreats concept to India with a property planned inside a working tea estate in the Darjeeling hills. Scheduled to open in 2031, Anantara Retreat Darjeeling Hills will combine 35 suites and 35 tented villas with plantation experiences and wellness facilities.
Minor Hotels has signed an agreement to manage the retreat at Tindharia Tea Estate in West Bengal. The project is being developed with JK Urbana Garden Private Limited, a joint venture between JK Urbanscapes Developers Limited and Kaushal Kumbhat.
A Working Tea Estate Shapes the Stay
The 849-acre estate will continue producing tea, with the garden and factory forming part of the guest experience. Accommodation is planned along its slopes, alongside an Anantara Spa, fitness center and swimming pool. The development also includes 750 square meters of meeting and event space for smaller groups and destination weddings.
That setting gives the project a clear focus: guests would stay within an agricultural landscape where tea production continues, rather than visit a garden as a short excursion from a town hotel. Minor says the retreat’s wellness experiences will draw on the surrounding landscape and local tea heritage.
Tindharia Is Outside Darjeeling Town
The proposed retreat is around 40 km from Darjeeling town. Minor Hotels puts Bagdogra International Airport approximately 33 km away, estimating a road transfer of about an hour. That is the company’s planning estimate, rather than a guaranteed journey time.
The location matters when choosing the shape of a trip. A stay centered on tea gardens and wellness would serve a different purpose from a hotel chosen for walking around Darjeeling town. Anyone combining both should allow for the separate journey between Tindharia and the town, rather than assume the retreat will be a central base.
A Retreat Concept Within Anantara’s India Plans
Anantara’s wider wellness offering ranges from individual treatments to tailored multi-day programs, drawing on spa, movement, nutrition and other disciplines. The Darjeeling announcement has not yet set out treatment menus, package lengths or prices, so those existing brand offerings should not be treated as a confirmed local program.
We previously covered how Minor Hotels is developing travel experiences beyond a conventional hotel stay. Here, the attraction is the chance to spend time on the estate itself, with tea production providing the setting and subject of the visit.
The agreement is a development announcement, with opening targeted for 2031. A precise opening date, room rates and reservation launch have not been announced. Those details will determine when travelers can turn the tea estate plans into a bookable stay.
