Key Notes

  • Etihad Guest and Rapid Rewards will link earning and redemption from spring 2027.
  • Members will earn their own program’s rewards on eligible partner flights.
  • A precise launch date, earning rates and redemption prices have not been announced.

Etihad Airways and Southwest Airlines will link their loyalty programs from spring 2027, giving members new ways to earn and spend rewards across the two carriers. The partnership connects Etihad Guest with Rapid Rewards, extending the travel options available to customers who already collect either airline’s loyalty currency.

Under the new partnership, Etihad Guest members will earn miles on eligible Southwest flights and redeem miles for Southwest reward travel. Rapid Rewards members will be able to earn points on eligible Etihad flights and use points for travel across Etihad’s network.

What Each Program’s Members Will Gain

For Etihad Guest members, Southwest brings access to a network spanning the United States, Mexico, Central America and the Caribbean. For Rapid Rewards members, Etihad adds international reward possibilities through its Abu Dhabi hub, with the announcement highlighting destinations including Krabi, Zanzibar and Hanoi.

The earning arrangement keeps each program’s own currency at the center: Etihad Guest miles for its members and Rapid Rewards points for Southwest members. The airlines have announced reciprocal earning and redemption, but have not announced a points-transfer ratio or an ability to combine balances into one account.

The practical value will depend on the rules published for launch. Eligible fares, earning rates and the points or miles required for a particular journey will matter more than the size of the combined route map. Travelers should wait for those details before deciding which program to credit a partner flight to.

Part of Southwest’s Wider Rewards Overhaul

Southwest lists Etihad alongside Icelandair and China Airlines among its initial international loyalty partners for spring 2027. Its official program update places partner earning and redemption within a wider set of changes to how members use their points.

Those changes have several different start dates. Southwest’s new Silver, Gold and Platinum tiers begin January 1, 2027, while international loyalty partnerships follow in spring. Rental-car redemptions are planned from mid-November 2026, with additional ways to use points for seats coming later in 2027.

We covered the tier changes and Companion Pass arrangements in our Rapid Rewards overhaul article. The Etihad agreement adds a separate international earning and redemption option; members should check the eventual partner terms rather than assume their Southwest tier benefits will apply to an Etihad booking.

What to Check Before Planning a Reward Trip

The partnership has been announced, but bookings under the new arrangement are not available yet. The airlines have given a spring 2027 launch window without a precise start date. Etihad says further information will be available through its website following the launch.

Once booking opens, compare the reward price, any cash charges, available cabin and change or cancellation conditions for your exact itinerary. Also check the booking channel and which fares qualify for earning. A partner relationship alone does not tell you how a particular ticket will be priced or what benefits it includes.

For now, the useful step is to keep the launch window in mind when planning 2027 travel. The agreement promises more places to use existing rewards, but its value for a specific holiday will become clear only when eligibility, availability and redemption prices can be checked.
