Key Notes
- United says Starlink is attracting new passengers who then stay for its wider onboard and service experience.
- The airline reported more than 640 equipped aircraft and coverage on about half of its flights in its October 20 update.
- MileagePlus members receive free Starlink access on equipped flights, with flight checks available within three days of departure.
United Airlines says Starlink Wi-Fi is helping persuade passengers to try the carrier, turning onboard connectivity into a reason to choose an airline. In its earnings update, CEO Scott Kirby said those customers were staying for United’s app, service, onboard product and technology.
The claim comes as Starlink reaches a larger share of the airline’s operation. United reported more than 640 equipped aircraft and availability on about half of its flights, including regional services, in its October 20 update. More than 5.4 million passengers experienced the service in September.
Wi-Fi Becomes Part of the Loyalty Pitch
United’s argument is that a better internet connection can start a customer relationship, while the rest of the journey helps retain it. The airline also reported that customer-service scores on Starlink-equipped aircraft were nearly double those on planes using other Wi-Fi services.
Those are airline-reported results. The announcement does not isolate a dollar amount of new ticket sales attributable to Starlink, and a higher satisfaction score is not the same measure as additional bookings. The figures nevertheless show why United is making connectivity prominent in its sales pitch.
How to Check Whether Your Flight Has Starlink
United’s new Starlink tracker lets passengers enter a travel date and flight number within three days of departure. It also shows installation progress across regional, narrowbody and widebody aircraft, plus the estimated share of equipped departures at each hub.
The tool updates for last-minute aircraft changes. United also flags scheduled Starlink availability through pre-flight emails, texts, flight-status information in its app and onboard signage.
Check each flight separately if your itinerary involves a connection. The proportion of equipped flights across the network is useful background, but it does not confirm the aircraft operating your particular departure. Recheck close to travel if connectivity is an important part of your plans.
Free Access for MileagePlus Members
Starlink is free for MileagePlus members in every cabin on equipped flights. Travelers should have their account details ready, while keeping the distinction between a free service and its availability: the membership benefit does not mean every United aircraft already has the equipment.
We previously covered United’s first Starlink-equipped 777, which brought the rollout to transatlantic widebody flying. The latest update reflects a broader installation program across both United and United Express.
Fleetwide Coverage Is Still a Target
United’s rollout announcement and latest earnings update retain an end-of-2027 target for fleetwide availability. That remains a projected completion date, with equipment still being installed across the operation.
For travelers choosing between flights, weigh connectivity alongside the fare, schedule, baggage allowance and connection time. A flight-specific check will be more useful than assuming that an airline’s overall progress guarantees the same onboard experience on every route.
Our report on United’s new Houston concourse covers another part of its customer investment. Together, the airport and onboard changes illustrate the broader experience United is promoting to passengers who first take notice because of the Wi-Fi.
