A striking new museum dedicated entirely to whales is preparing to open in one of the most dramatic corners of northern Norway. The Whale, a new knowledge and experience center in Andenes, is scheduled to welcome its first visitors on June 4, 2027, roughly 190 miles north of the Arctic Circle.
Designed by Copenhagen-based architect Dorte Mandrup, the building is intended to feel like part of the coastal landscape rather than a conventional museum. Its low, curved concrete roof rises gently from the rocky shoreline and will be covered with stones, creating the impression that the ground itself has been lifted. The roof will also serve as a walkable viewing platform overlooking the Norwegian Sea.
Those views are a major part of the attraction. Andenes is known for sightings of sperm whales, humpback whales, orcas, minke whales and long-finned pilot whales. Depending on the season, visitors may also experience the midnight sun or northern lights from the museum’s rooftop.
Inside, The Whale will combine science, art, storytelling and immersive technology. One installation will feature life-size wooden sculptures of five individual orcas known to swim in Norwegian waters, while a large suspended whale sculpture will explore the animals’ scale, behavior and social lives.
Another gallery will introduce visitors to all 90 modern whale species and trace roughly 50 million years of whale evolution. A separate anatomical exhibition will include bones, baleen, whale blood and other biological specimens, offering a closer look at how the animals survive in extreme marine environments.
An immersive underwater gallery will place visitors within the ocean food web, exploring feeding, nursing, death and the role whale remains play in deep-sea ecosystems. The Soundscape installation will use darkness, light, ocean noise and whale calls to demonstrate how whales communicate, including low-frequency sounds that can be physically felt.
The museum will also examine humanity’s more complicated relationship with whales. Exhibitions will address industrial whaling, cultural interpretations of whales and the increasing overlap between whale migration routes and human activity such as commercial shipping.
The Whale is positioned as more than an indoor attraction. Its coastal setting places visitors close to Bleik Canyon, a nutrient-rich underwater trench that supports whale populations and already draws whale-watching tours to Andenes. The area also offers hiking routes and views of Andenes Lighthouse, which dates to 1859.
With a café, restaurant and access to whale safaris, The Whale is being designed as both a cultural attraction and a gateway to the surrounding Arctic landscape. Its combination of architecture, wildlife and immersive storytelling could make Andenes an even stronger destination for travelers looking to experience northern Norway beyond the country’s better-known fjords and cities.
