Key Notes

  • La Résidence Phou Vao in Luang Prabang has joined The Luxury Collection, marking Marriott’s debut in Laos and its 800th property in Asia Pacific excluding China.
  • The 36-suite resort sits in three acres of tropical gardens about two kilometers from the old town, with its original architecture and hilltop pool preserved.
  • Guests can use a 13-meter infinity pool and Mekong Spa, with French brasserie dining and access to Luang Prabang’s heritage sights.

Marriott International has entered Laos with La Résidence Phou Vao, a 36-suite hilltop resort in Luang Prabang joining The Luxury Collection. The opening brings the company’s portfolio in Asia Pacific excluding China to 800 properties, adding a small, garden-filled retreat above one of Southeast Asia’s best-known heritage towns.

Marriott announced the opening on November 4. The hotel is an established property entering a new brand chapter: its original architecture, gardens and hilltop pool have been retained, while interiors, dining and guest experiences have been refreshed.

A Hilltop Stay Above Luang Prabang

The resort occupies three acres of tropical gardens about two kilometers from the old town. Its position offers views toward the mountains and Luang Prabang’s temples, with space to retreat from sightseeing rather than a setting directly on the historic center’s streets.

Accommodation falls into Garden Heritage, Mountain View and Phou Si Temple suites. Rosewood finishes and handwoven fabrics feature in the interiors, with separate living areas and private terraces in selected suites. The category names also give travelers a useful starting point when choosing between garden and temple-facing views.

French Dining and Lao Spa Traditions

La Brasserie de la Résidence serves French brasserie dishes, while the adjoining bar features cocktails made with local spirits. The resort also offers a Lao tasting menu and private dining at Villa des Arts, a colonial residence a short distance away.

The Mekong Spa draws on Lao healing traditions, including Sip Sen Lao massage and treatments using Hmong indigo compresses. A 13-meter freshwater infinity pool overlooks the mountains, and a fitness center provides another option between outings.

A Base for Exploring a World Heritage Town

Luang Prabang has held World Heritage status since 1995. UNESCO recognizes the town for the way traditional Lao buildings and urban patterns sit alongside European colonial architecture, with temples, wooden houses and brick residences forming a remarkably preserved townscape.

Built on a peninsula between the Mekong and Nam Khan rivers, the historic center is an attraction in its own right. Wat Xieng Thong and Mount Phou Si are among the landmarks to consider, while longer outings can take visitors to Kuang Si Waterfalls or the Pak Ou Caves.

Another Addition to Marriott’s Regional Footprint

The Laos debut follows the Fairfield opening in Krabi that we covered this week. The two properties show different sides of Marriott’s regional expansion: a select-service beach-area hotel in Thailand and a small Luxury Collection resort in a heritage destination.

La Résidence Phou Vao is now accepting guests through its official website. The hotel lists check-in from 3 p.m. and checkout at noon, along with an airport shuttle. Travelers arranging a rail arrival should plan a separate transfer: the property places the China–Laos railway station about 11 kilometers away.
