Key Notes

  • Lufthansa Group announces ten new intercontinental connections for summer 2027.
  • Columbus, Phoenix and Edmonton receive new nonstop links from Germany.
  • Launch dates vary, with the Munich–Phoenix service beginning in August.

Lufthansa Group has announced its most extensive route expansion since 2020 for summer 2027, with new services to Columbus, Phoenix and Edmonton among the headline additions. The wider program includes ten new intercontinental connections and more flights on existing routes, with bookings opening on October 20.

The summer schedule combines new routes, returning services and extensions of existing operations. For travelers, the distinction is useful: some flights will offer a new nonstop option, while others provide more departure days or a longer season.

Columbus, Phoenix and Edmonton Get New Links

Lufthansa’s Frankfurt–Columbus flights start May 5, 2027, on Wednesdays, Fridays and Sundays, using an Allegris-equipped Boeing 787-9. Munich–Phoenix follows on August 3, with Airbus A350-900 flights on Tuesdays, Fridays and Sundays.

Discover Airlines will connect Frankfurt and Edmonton from June 1, flying on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays. Edmonton joins Calgary and Halifax in its Canadian network. These three-times-weekly services make departure-day flexibility particularly useful when planning a trip.

Japan Expansion Brings Two Tokyo Airport Options

The previously announced Japan additions remain a substantial part of the program. Lufthansa will fly daily between Frankfurt and Tokyo-Narita from March 28, while seasonal Frankfurt–Nagoya services return on March 29, operating on Mondays, Wednesdays and Saturdays.

Both routes are planned with Boeing 787-9 aircraft fitted with Allegris cabins. Narita adds another airport option alongside Lufthansa’s existing Frankfurt and Munich flights to Tokyo-Haneda. When comparing itineraries, check which Tokyo airport is included, especially if your arrival and departure use different airports.

As we covered in our earlier Japan expansion article, the group plans up to 50 weekly Japan flights across its hub airlines. That includes services to Haneda, Narita, Osaka and Nagoya, giving travelers several entry points for a wider itinerary.

SWISS Builds on Its Bengaluru Launch

SWISS’s five-weekly Bengaluru service will continue into the summer timetable. The route was first announced for winter 2026/27, so its summer inclusion extends a new connection rather than marking a second launch. Bengaluru joins Delhi and Mumbai in the airline’s Indian network.

In its original Bengaluru announcement, SWISS highlighted demand from the technology and business community as well as travel to southern India. For passengers starting outside Switzerland, the practical comparison is between the total journey through Zurich and alternatives through other hubs.

Caracas Joins ITA Airways’ Summer Network

ITA Airways’ Rome Fiumicino–Caracas route starts March 30, 2027, with Airbus A330-900 flights on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Sundays. The service gives travelers a nonstop option between Italy and Venezuela and adds another South American destination alongside Buenos Aires, Rio de Janeiro and São Paulo.

The route had already been announced before the group’s summer schedule release. Its inclusion brings it into the broader network picture, rather than representing a newly disclosed launch date. ITA also plans to add Rome–Verona from March 28.

More Choice Beyond the Headline Routes

Austrian Airlines will keep Bangkok daily throughout summer and serve Tokyo daily from May to October. Brussels Airlines is adding Cairo with five weekly flights. Edelweiss is increasing services to several leisure destinations, including Windhoek, Punta Cana and Malé. Eurowings will announce its summer program separately.

The expansion also coincides with changes to Lufthansa’s long-haul fleet. Its A350-1000 announcement sets December 3, 2026, as the first planned passenger flight from Munich to Tokyo-Haneda, followed by Shanghai and Singapore. Those flights will alternate between A350-1000 and A350-900 aircraft with Allegris cabins.

For summer bookings, compare the operating airline, airport, departure days and cabin on the exact flight you want. The new routes do not all start at the beginning of the season: Phoenix, for example, begins in August. A broader schedule creates more options, but the launch date and frequency still determine whether a route works for your holiday.
