Key Notes
- A reported Al-Qassim–Geneva charter rose from about €60,000 to €94,000.
- Etihad has canceled key Saudi services through October 24.
- Travelers should verify operating arrangements and current official advice before departure.
Private jet charters out of Saudi Arabia are becoming substantially more expensive as Houthi attacks disrupt commercial flights and travelers look for alternative departures. Brokers cited in the Financial Times’ report describe price increases exceeding 50%, adding a steep financial barrier for people trying to leave.
The disruption is also affecting scheduled travel. Etihad’s latest operating notice extends cancellations on key Saudi routes through October 24, underscoring why a confirmed alternative matters more than a flight appearing in a booking search.
A €94,000 Charter Illustrates the Price Jump
One example, also detailed by SBS News, involved a 14-seat jet from Al-Qassim to Geneva costing €94,000 last week, compared with about €60,000 before Riyadh’s airport closure. That is an increase of roughly 57%. These are whole-aircraft charter costs, rather than individual airfares.
Al-Qassim has become an alternative departure point for people leaving Riyadh. The reporting also identifies limited aircraft availability and higher war-risk insurance charges as pressures on charter prices. A private booking nevertheless remains subject to the operating conditions affecting the journey.
Etihad Extends Saudi Cancellations
As checked on October 20, Etihad’s flight update lists all services between Abu Dhabi and both Riyadh and Dammam as canceled through Saturday, October 24. For Jeddah, the same deadline covers flights EY601, EY602, EY603 and EY604.
The airline says further changes remain possible. Passengers should check their specific flight and booking, including any onward connection, before leaving for the airport. The end date of a cancellation notice should not be treated as a guaranteed restart date.
For affected Etihad bookings, the carrier says passengers will receive information about their options, including rebooking the itinerary where connections are involved. We previously covered the earlier extension; the October 24 notice now moves that deadline further out.
What Travelers Should Confirm Before Paying
Anyone comparing charters should request the full price, the operating carrier’s identity and the cancellation terms in writing. Ask specifically whether insurance, aircraft positioning and ground transfers are included, and what happens if the agreed departure airport becomes unavailable.
Those details can differ between bookings. Broker Victor’s booking information, for example, says it discloses the operator and aircraft tail number and passes on the operator’s cancellation policies. Its role as a broker is distinct from the airline actually operating the aircraft.
Travel Advice Still Matters
The UK’s travel advice, current on October 20, warns against all travel within 10 kilometers of the Yemen border and all but essential travel elsewhere in Saudi Arabia. It advises British nationals to stay away from King Khalid International Airport until it is secure and follow Saudi authorities’ instructions.
The guidance also asks those wishing to leave to consider a land journey to a neighboring country followed by a flight, after checking entry and exit requirements. For travelers weighing any alternative, the priority is a confirmed, permitted itinerary and current official guidance; a higher charter price alone offers no assurance that a departure can proceed.
