At least 64 people have died after two high-speed trains collided near Urda in Spain’s Toledo province on October 28. RTVE reported the updated toll, citing the Castilla-La Mancha government, with dozens injured. The casualty count remains provisional as recovery work continues.

The crash happened at about 8:54 a.m. local time on the Madrid–Seville high-speed corridor. A Renfe AVE struck a stationary Iryo train from behind near kilometer 118. Both trains were traveling toward Seville, and several carriages derailed, with some falling down an embankment.

RTVE’s latest account says the main LZB signalling system had failed and an alternative system was in use. Preliminary reporting also points to a possible control-room error. Investigators have yet to establish the precise sequence of events or determine responsibility.

The regional government escalated its emergency plan and requested military emergency assistance. Medical teams, firefighters and the Guardia Civil were deployed, while reception and family-assistance facilities were established in Urda and major stations. Its information line for affected families is 900 122 112.

High-speed through services between Madrid and Andalusia remain disrupted. Our earlier coverage explains the corridor closure and initial ticket arrangements. Travelers should check their specific train with the operator before heading to a station, particularly when connecting with a flight or another separately booked journey.
