American Airlines Plans Its Largest Admirals Club in Charlotte

American Airlines plans a lounge of more than 40,000 square feet above Charlotte airport’s atrium, with shower suites, dining and work areas. Existing clubs will stay open during construction.

American Airlines plans to build its largest Admirals Club at Charlotte Douglas International Airport, creating more than 40,000 square feet of lounge space at its second-largest hub. The new club will occupy the airport’s atrium mezzanine, with views over the concourse and separate areas for dining, working and relaxing.

The airline announced the project on October 6 and says construction will begin in 2026. It has not given an opening date in the announcement. For travelers booking a connection through Charlotte now, the new lounge remains a future facility rather than an option available on an upcoming trip.

A Bigger Lounge Above the Atrium

American’s plans include spa-style shower suites, bars and food-serving areas, alongside seating arranged for different uses. The design will reference Charlotte’s tree canopy and textile heritage. That mix puts everyday passenger needs at the center of the project: somewhere to eat, take a shower or work between flights.

The airline says Charlotte connects passengers to more than 180 destinations in 27 countries, with over 650 flights on peak days. At a hub of that scale, the practical value of a larger lounge will depend on how comfortably it handles busy connecting periods as well as its headline floor area.

Which Charlotte Lounges Are Open Now?

American says its existing Charlotte lounge spaces will remain open during construction. Those include the Admirals Clubs in Concourse B and at the C/D junction, plus the Provisions by Admirals Club location near Gate A1.

The airline’s Charlotte directory lists the Concourse B club after security between gates B3 and B5. The other full-service club is at the intersection of Concourses C and D. Both currently list daily hours of 5:15 a.m. to 10:45 p.m., complimentary food and drinks, a full-service bar and Wi-Fi.

Provisions is a different proposition for a shorter stop. The location beside Gate A1 offers food and nonalcoholic drinks in a grab-and-go format, with listed hours of 4:15 a.m. to 9:15 p.m. It is useful to distinguish that service from a conventional lounge when deciding where to spend a layover.

How Admirals Club Access Works

American’s current membership options include annual access and a One-Day Pass costing $79 or 7,900 AAdvantage miles. A day pass can be activated within 12 months of purchase and remains valid for 24 hours once activated. Entry is subject to capacity, and passes may not be accepted or sold when a club is busy.

The pass also requires a boarding pass for same-day travel on a qualifying American or oneworld flight. Travelers should check the access rules against their itinerary: membership, eligible cards, cabin and frequent-flyer status provide different routes to entry, with different guest allowances. A domestic premium-cabin ticket alone should not be treated as a universal lounge pass.

For annual members, the distinction between membership types also matters. American’s lower-priced single membership excludes guests and partner-lounge access, while its broader Admirals Club membership offers additional privileges. Compare those terms with how often you travel and whether you usually bring someone with you.

Part of a Wider Lounge Expansion

Charlotte’s Admirals Club project builds on American’s earlier commitment to expand its lounge footprint and introduce the airport’s first Flagship Lounge. The two concepts are separate: the new size announcement concerns the Admirals Club, and travelers should not assume that access to one automatically provides entry to the other.

We have also covered American’s DFW expansion, including a planned 37,000-square-foot Admirals Club in Terminal C. Charlotte’s newly announced footprint would exceed that project, showing how quickly the airline’s largest-lounge plans are evolving.

Our coverage of its fall menus highlights another part of the investment: food and service inside the clubs. For Charlotte passengers, the next milestones will be construction progress and a confirmed opening schedule; until then, the existing locations remain the ones to plan around.
