P&O Cruises’ Arcadia will join Holland America Line in 2029, bringing the fleet to 12 ships and adding capacity for more than 2,000 guests. The move is part of a reshuffle within Carnival Corporation that will also see Cunard’s Queen Anne become a P&O ship.
Holland America announced the addition on October 6. For travelers, the immediate distinction is between a confirmed fleet transfer and a cruise that can already be booked: Arcadia’s future Holland America itineraries and onboard details have yet to be announced.
A Familiar Ship Design for Holland America
Arcadia shares the Vista-class platform used by Holland America’s Oosterdam, Noordam, Westerdam and Zuiderdam. That makes it a familiar design for the line, although passengers should wait for the completed refurbishment plans before assuming its cabins, restaurants or public spaces will match another ship.
Shipbuilder Fincantieri’s ship profile records Arcadia’s construction at Marghera and delivery in 2005. This is the transfer of an existing vessel, with an established service history, rather than the arrival of a newly built cruise ship.
Today, P&O presents Arcadia as a mid-sized, adults-only ship sailing from Southampton. Its current offering includes Mediterranean and northern European itineraries as well as longer world voyages. Those details describe the P&O experience; they do not establish where the ship will sail or what its passenger policies will be under Holland America.
A Refurbishment Before a New Chapter
Arcadia will enter the Holland America Evolution program, but its specific venues and features are still being decided. The line’s existing modernization work gives travelers an indication of its priorities, without confirming a final layout for this ship.
On Oosterdam, the changes include a Grand Dutch Café, a redesigned Ocean Bar and additional accommodation. Holland America’s updated schedule puts that ship’s return on October 31, 2027, with a 10-day voyage from Civitavecchia to Trieste. That is a separate project and timetable from Arcadia’s arrival.
We examined the broader investment in our coverage of the fleet refresh. For anyone considering a future Arcadia sailing, the useful next step will be to compare its own published deck plans and cabin categories once the line releases them.
What Changes for P&O and Cunard Guests
The brands’ joint fleet update sets Arcadia’s P&O farewell season to end on August 21, 2029, with the transfer scheduled for late 2029. Farewell itineraries and their on-sale date will be announced separately. The end of the P&O season therefore should not be read as the date of the first Holland America departure.
Queen Anne will continue with Cunard through its 2028/29 World Voyage before an extensive reimagining and a new name. It is due to enter P&O service in May 2029. Its new name, onboard experience and inaugural P&O program have not yet been revealed.
For existing bookings, the announcement contains a clear reassurance: currently published voyages before each ship’s respective transfer date are due to operate as planned. Passengers do not need to infer a cancellation simply because a later change of brand has been announced.
What to Watch Before Booking for 2029
The eventual itinerary will matter as much as the ship’s new branding. Check the departure port, time in each destination, cabin location and fare inclusions when sailings become available. A familiar vessel can offer a different holiday once its route and onboard product change.
For a nearer-term comparison, our guide to Holland America’s 2028 Europe sailings covers an already announced program. Arcadia creates room for the line to expand its choices in 2029, but a specific region, homeport or opening booking date remains to be confirmed.
