Travel Advisors See Opportunity and Questions in Royal Caribbean’s Sandals Deal
Travel advisors see potential for cruise-and-resort vacations from Royal Caribbean’s Sandals investment, while watching pricing, loyalty and the guest experience.
Travel advisors see opportunities to combine cruises and resort stays following Royal Caribbean Group’s agreement to buy a 50% stake in Sandals Resorts International for approximately $3 billion. Their enthusiasm comes with questions about pricing, loyalty benefits and preserving the experience that keeps Sandals guests returning.
The companies announced the partnership on September 23, with closing expected in early 2027. The proposed joint venture covers the adults-focused Sandals and family-focused Beaches brands. Current reservations and day-to-day resort and cruise operations remain unaffected while the partners consider future commercial opportunities.
More Ways to Combine Land and Sea
For agencies already arranging hotel stays around sailings, the appeal is practical. Laura Swanstrom Reece, owner of Reece Worldwide Travel, told TravelPulse that her agency frequently builds pre- and post-cruise stays into vacations. She sees the partnership as an opportunity to connect those components more smoothly.
Steven Griswold, owner of Pixie Vacations, described a possible combination of a three-day cruise and four days at a Beaches resort. That is an advisor’s illustration of what might emerge, rather than an announced package. His point is that combining products need not require travelers to extend a typical weeklong vacation.
Jamie Margolis Ross, founder of Moms at Sea Travel, told Travel Weekly that the agreement could help her cruise-focused agency introduce loyal clients to resort vacations. She also hopes it will create more options for stays before and after cruises.
Travelmation founder Adam Duckworth highlighted both companies’ established support for travel advisors. Meanwhile, Internova Travel Group’s Stephen McGillivray sees potential for advisors to deepen customer relationships across multiple trips and different stages of life. The opportunity extends beyond selling one combined itinerary to recommending different vacation styles over time.
Protecting the Resort Experience
Some sellers are more cautious about how closer cooperation could affect Sandals’ all-inclusive model. Travel Hub 365 founder Stephen Scott told TravelPulse that existing customers value the current pricing structure and may resist additional charges or changes to the atmosphere. Those concerns describe potential risks, not announced policy changes.
Scott also sees Sandals’ customer base as a source of travelers who have not yet tried cruising. Reaching that audience could support Royal Caribbean’s growth, but advisors will want to understand how cross-selling works without weakening either brand’s identity.
One distinction is already emerging. Travel Weekly reported that Royal Caribbean Group CEO Jason Liberty said the partnership would not center on selling Sandals day passes to cruise passengers. That addresses one concern about resort access, although detailed future packages and benefits have yet to be unveiled.
For now, the $3 billion Sandals agreement creates possibilities rather than a new product advisors can immediately book. Joint marketing, easier cross-brand discovery and potential loyalty connections remain areas to explore. Travelers should base purchasing decisions on existing inclusions and confirmed benefits, while advisors watch for specific offers as the transaction moves toward closing.
