Key Notes

  • The Cormorant at 55 South has opened in Puerto Williams with 150 rooms for Antarctica-bound travelers.
  • Full fly-cruise journeys include hotel stays before and after the expedition, while half Fly Cruise itineraries include one night.
  • Silversea’s season through March 2027 includes 29 fly-cruise voyages within a wider 40-voyage Antarctica programme.

Silversea has opened The Cormorant at 55 South, a 150-room hotel in Puerto Williams, Chile, designed as a gateway for its Antarctica Fly Cruise guests. The property brings the pre-expedition stay into the cruise line’s own hospitality operation at the southern tip of South America.

The Royal Caribbean Group brand held the opening ceremony on November 5 and announced the launch the following day. Silversea describes the property as the world’s southernmost hotel, with the building and its interiors drawing on the surrounding Patagonian landscape.

How the Antarctica Journey Works

Silversea’s hotel FAQ describes a journey beginning with a stay in Santiago, followed by a charter flight to Puerto Williams and an overnight at The Cormorant. Guests then fly to King George Island to join their expedition ship.

For travelers flying both to and from Antarctica, hotel stays are included before and after the expedition. Guests on a half Fly Cruise itinerary receive one night at the hotel, reflecting the different routing. That distinction matters when comparing departures: the same hotel feature does not imply an identical flight-and-stay arrangement on every voyage.

The fly-cruise programme is designed to replace a ship crossing of the Drake Passage with a flight on the relevant leg. We have also covered fly-sail options from Atlas Ocean Voyages, another example of the different ways operators combine flights and expedition sailing.

A Base for Preparation as Well as Rest

An opening-week first look by The Points Guy describes facilities where guests can check or exchange polar clothing, prepare personal equipment for biosecurity requirements and attend an initial Antarctica briefing. Bringing those preparations ashore gives the stay a practical role before embarkation.

The rooms offer forest or Beagle Channel views. Latitude 55 serves regional cuisine and family-style meals, while Bar Sur focuses on Chilean wines and drinks including Pisco. A fireplace lounge provides another gathering space between travel days.

29 Fly-Cruise Voyages This Season

Through March 2027, Silversea plans 40 Antarctica voyages across Silver Endeavour, Silver Wind and Silver Cloud, including 29 Fly Cruise departures featuring the hotel. The season’s itineraries range from six to 21 nights; some extend to South Georgia and the Falkland Islands.

The hotel is scheduled to operate from October through March. Its primary audience is Silversea’s Antarctica Fly Cruise guests, although the official FAQ says other travelers may be accommodated when occupancy permits.

What to Confirm Before Booking

Travelers should compare the complete itinerary, including the Santiago stay, charter flights, hotel nights and expedition sailing. Confirm which direction is flown on a half Fly Cruise and review the operator’s arrangements for changes to the scheduled journey.

For guests considering a standalone visit to Puerto Williams, availability requires a separate check. The opening establishes a new base for Antarctic travel, while the precise room, flight and transfer arrangements remain tied to the voyage selected.
