Ryanair’s onboard scratch card program is drawing renewed attention after two passengers turned small in-flight purchases into major cash prizes. The airline announced that Helen Swindells, a longtime customer from Liverpool, won €500,000 in Ryanair’s 2026 annual “Win A Million” scratch card draw after buying a €2 card on a flight from Krakow to Liverpool in May 2025.

Swindells joined Ryanair representatives at Slane Castle in County Meath, Ireland, for the airline’s annual prize event, where she played for a top prize of €1 million and ultimately walked away with €500,000. She said she had originally bought the card to support Naomi & Jacks, a UK charity providing care for seriously ill babies, children and young adults.

The win highlights a part of the Ryanair passenger experience that is often easy to overlook. Since 2009, the airline’s scratch card program has combined onboard sales, prize draws and charitable giving, offering passengers a low-cost chance to win cash or other rewards while supporting charity partners. Ryanair says the program supports 13 charities across Europe, many focused on children and families in need.

The prizes can range from onboard spend credit to €10,000 cash prizes, a new car and qualification for the annual “Win A Million” grand prize draw. For most passengers, the purchase is a minor add-on during a flight. For Swindells, it became a life-changing result.

Her win came shortly before another passenger, 18-year-old Faustino Vertice from Pompei, Italy, was named as a €10,000 winner. Vertice bought his €2 Ryanair scratch card while traveling home from Thessaloniki to Rome in December. He said he had not expected to win anything and planned to use the prize to help his family and possibly take more trips.

The two stories arrive as summer travel season begins across Europe, when Ryanair flights are expected to carry large numbers of leisure travelers to holiday destinations. Onboard retail remains a key part of the low-cost airline model, and scratch cards offer a product that combines entertainment, impulse buying and a charitable message.

Ryanair has presented the wins as proof that the program continues to benefit both passengers and nonprofit partners. The airline’s representatives have emphasized that the scratch card initiative raises money for charities while giving customers access to prizes that can be unusually large relative to the small purchase price.

For travelers, the odds of a major win remain uncertain, as with any prize draw. But the latest winners show why the program retains attention: it turns a routine flight purchase into a story that can travel well beyond the aircraft cabin. In Ryanair’s case, a €2 scratch card has become both a fundraising tool and a reminder that the smallest onboard purchase can occasionally become the most memorable part of the trip.
