Marriott is adding two different ways to stay on Thailand’s Khao Lak coast. An agreement with KS Hotels and Resorts will bring Moxy Khao Lak Memories Beach and Matalay Khao Lak, Apartments by Marriott Bonvoy to the new Matalay development. The projects would introduce Moxy to Southern Thailand and mark the Apartments by Marriott Bonvoy brand’s first property in the country.
The signing announcement, issued by Marriott, outlines a 160-room hotel alongside 60 two-bedroom apartments. It does not specify an opening date for either property. For travelers, the distinction matters: these are additions to the destination’s future accommodation pipeline, rather than hotels ready for an upcoming booking.
Moxy Brings a Social Stay to Memories Beach
Moxy Khao Lak Memories Beach is planned at the northern end of Memories Beach, beside its surf village. The design will draw on surfing’s early years, with retro styling and rooms arranged around a freeform pool. Facilities announced include a Moxy Bar & Restaurant, pool and beach bars, a gym and a beachfront events lawn.
That mix points toward a hotel where shared spaces form a substantial part of the stay. A traveler looking for beach bars and a sociable pool setting may weigh those features differently from someone whose priority is a self-contained apartment. Published room layouts and rates, when available, will make the comparison more useful.
Two-Bedroom Apartments for Longer Coastal Trips
Matalay Khao Lak, Apartments by Marriott Bonvoy is planned with 110-square-meter apartments, each featuring a full kitchen and washer-dryer. Marriott says the accommodation will offer pool access or ocean views. The two-bedroom layout is aimed at families and travelers spending longer on the coast.
The wider apartment brand emphasizes separate sleeping and living areas and the freedom to prepare meals. Those features can change the rhythm of a holiday: families have somewhere to gather after children go to bed, while longer-stay guests can manage laundry without repeatedly packing for a hotel move.
Service expectations deserve attention alongside floor space. Marriott’s brand FAQ says daily housekeeping is not provided, with housekeeping available every seven days for longer stays. That is general brand guidance; travelers should check the eventual Khao Lak property’s published arrangements before comparing it with a conventional resort.
Part of a Larger Beachfront Destination
Matalay spans 200 hectares. A planned three-kilometer jogging and cycling route through forest and lakes will connect the development with JW Marriott Khao Lak Resort & Spa. The overall destination includes 1.4 kilometers of beachfront, placing the new hotels within a wider coastal setting rather than an isolated hotel site.
Marriott’s plans also include surfing, kayaking, wellness activities, mini-golf and dining. The announcement does not detail activity prices or what will be included in room rates. It estimates a 75-minute road transfer from Phuket International Airport, a planning figure that travelers should allow flexibility around when arranging arrival transport.
What Travelers Can Plan Around Now
The signing creates a useful distinction between two accommodation formats in the same area. Moxy’s proposed bars, pool and events space suggest a social base for a beach trip. The apartments put more emphasis on private space and everyday facilities. Neither description establishes which option will cost less, and nightly rates will only be part of a meaningful comparison.
Opening dates, booking availability, detailed service arrangements and transport charges remain the information to watch. Once those are published, travelers can compare the full cost and pace of a stay, including meals, transfers and activities, rather than choosing on the brand name alone.
We recently covered Marriott’s Saudi hotel deal, another development agreement involving several brands. The Khao Lak signing brings that mix of accommodation styles to a coastal destination, with the eventual opening details determining when travelers can add it to their plans.
