Maldivian is giving passengers more ways to customise their flights with Journey+, a collection of optional services covering priority airport handling, extra baggage, lounge access, cabin upgrades and domestic onboard refreshments. The Maldives’ national airline has brought those extras together under one brand, with different options for domestic and international journeys.

For travelers, the practical benefit is being able to choose the services that suit a particular flight. Someone carrying additional luggage may value prepaid baggage, while a passenger with a longer airport wait might prefer lounge access. The important detail is that the five options have different eligibility rules.

Priority Services and Prepaid Baggage

Journey+ Premier provides priority check-in and baggage handling on domestic flights. Maldivian’s service guide lists domestic availability at Velana, Maafaru, Hanimaadhoo and Gan international airports. International passengers can also receive priority boarding.

Journey+ Bags lets passengers buy additional baggage allowance before departure at rates the airline says are lower than airport walk-up charges. Its published domestic options add 3kg, 6kg, 9kg or 12kg.

The useful starting point is the allowance already attached to the ticket. Weighing luggage before choosing an extra block makes the comparison clearer, especially when a trip involves several flights with different baggage limits. Ask for the price for the actual route and confirm which flight the purchase covers.

Lounges, Cabin Upgrades and Domestic Snacks

Journey+ Relax offers prepaid access to selected Maldivian lounges, with light food and beverages. Lounge location and the time available before boarding should be part of the decision: an extra is most useful when it fits the passenger’s actual airport schedule.

Journey+ Upgrade applies to eligible international services. Maldivian describes a fixed-fee move to an available Premium or Business Class cabin, depending on aircraft type and availability. Passengers should confirm the cabin offered on their flight before deciding whether the quoted upgrade is worthwhile.

Journey+ Bites is the domestic option: a pre-ordered combination of one snack and one beverage. The airline lists it for all its domestic flights. It gives travelers a simple refreshment choice alongside the airport and baggage services.

Arrange Extras Before Departure

Maldivian lists its call centre, Q2 ticketing office, passenger sales agents, general sales agents, Viber and WhatsApp as purchase channels. Its guidance says Journey+ add-ons should be bought 24 hours before departure, so travelers should arrange them ahead of the final day’s airport preparations.

Have the booking reference, flight date and requested service ready when asking for a quote. Confirm the total charge, the passengers covered and how the purchase will appear on the booking. Keeping that confirmation with the flight documents makes it easier to check the arrangement at the airport.

For a connecting itinerary, discuss each relevant sector with the airline or booking agent. The domestic and international descriptions differ, and the benefit available on one flight should be checked separately for the next.

Seat Selection Was Announced for Phase 2

Visit Maldives’ launch announcement, published on August 30, described the five services as the first phase of Journey+. It also set out plans for Phase 2 to include seat selection and further options. Maldivian’s current Journey+ page presents the five initial services.

Travelers who want to choose seats should therefore ask about the arrangements for their booking rather than assume that purchasing a Journey+ extra includes seat selection. The same approach helps with upgrades and lounge access: confirm the specific benefit being purchased.

We recently covered United’s new Base fares, which separate some premium-cabin benefits from the ticket price. Maldivian’s optional extras raise a similar planning question: which services will you use, and what will the flight cost once those choices are added? Comparing the complete journey is the best way to judge the value.
