Holiday Flights 2026: KAYAK Maps the Best Booking Windows

KAYAK’s holiday report highlights when to book, cheaper Thanksgiving and Christmas departures, and destinations with falling airfare.

Holiday flight savings in 2026 may depend as much on the departure date as the destination. KAYAK’s new holiday travel announcement highlights lower fares for travelers who can shift their plans, compare two one-way tickets or choose a city where prices have fallen since last year.

The useful distinction is between when to buy and when to fly. A historical booking window can help guide a search, while a cheaper departure date gives travelers something specific to compare. Neither replaces checking the fare available for their own airport and itinerary.

When to Book Thanksgiving and Christmas Flights

In its October 2 announcement, KAYAK says domestic Thanksgiving fares have historically reached a low about five weeks before the holiday, then climbed sharply inside the final two weeks. Its Christmas guidance puts the historical buying window at four to seven weeks before departure.

Those patterns are a reason to start comparing prices now, rather than a promise that waiting will produce a cheaper ticket. For a family with fixed school dates or a specific flight in mind, the relevant question is whether an acceptable fare is available for the trip they actually need.

KAYAK’s price alerts can track selected routes and dates. Use them to follow a realistic shortlist, including an alternative departure day if one is possible, instead of treating a national average as a target price for every route.

The Departure Dates Worth Comparing

The company’s full report identifies the following departures as offering better value before the holidays. These are averages for round-trip economy tickets departing U.S. airports, not fares available from every airport.

Flying on Thanksgiving Day, November 26, could bring still larger savings: up to 19% domestically and 49% internationally compared with November 20. That option is most useful for travelers whose celebrations begin after arrival, or who are using the holiday for a getaway.

Canada Offers Value as Some Long-Haul Fares Fall

KAYAK’s announcement puts average holiday airfare to Toronto at $486, Vancouver at $516 and Montreal at $556. It also reports year-over-year fare declines of 20% for Cusco, 16% for Phuket and 13% for Fiji.

The comparison matters for travelers who can choose their destination. A lower flight price can make a different city worth exploring, but the full budget still needs accommodation, airport transfers and the cost of the stay. A percentage decline alone does not establish which trip will be cheapest overall.

Two One-Way Tickets Can Save Money, With Different Rules

The report highlights potential savings of up to 30% internationally and 29% domestically from combining separate one-way tickets. KAYAK calls these combinations Hacker Fares, and they can involve different airlines for the outbound and return journeys.

Its pricing guidance explains that the tickets are independent. A cancellation or change on one does not oblige the other airline to adjust its booking. Check both fares are available, and compare baggage allowances, change rules and refund terms before committing to either ticket.

We examined a similar issue in our coverage of United’s base fares: the lower headline price needs to be weighed against what the fare includes. The same comparison is useful when assembling an outward and return trip from separate bookings.

What the Holiday Data Actually Measures

KAYAK’s main holiday dataset uses searches made from April 1 to September 1, 2026, for travel from November 20, 2026, to January 6, 2027, compared with equivalent periods a year earlier. Its Thanksgiving and Christmas flight analyses cover departures from U.S. airports.

These are search-based fare averages, not a list of bookable offers or a count of completed reservations. The report also uses separate historical trend charts to discuss booking timing. Readers should keep those measures distinct when comparing a quoted destination average with a fare found today.

Our previous coverage of holiday travel demand tracked the budget pressures facing Americans in 2025. This year’s practical starting point is a short list of workable dates and destinations, followed by a comparison of the complete cost and ticket conditions for each option.
