City Express by Marriott has entered Canada with the opening of City Express by Marriott Port Hope, giving Marriott International another foothold in the country’s competitive midscale hotel market. The 91-room property marks the brand’s first hotel in Canada and expands Marriott Bonvoy’s portfolio with a value-focused option designed for practical, efficient stays.

The hotel is located along Highway 401, one of Canada’s busiest transportation corridors. That positioning is central to the strategy. Port Hope sits within reach of Toronto, Kingston, Ottawa, Prince Edward County, the Kawarthas and the Niagara Region, making the property a convenient stop for road trippers, corporate travelers and guests moving across Ontario.

For Marriott, the opening is less about a single hotel and more about brand expansion. City Express by Marriott already has more than 160 properties across seven countries, with formats that include City Centro, City Express Junior, City Express Plus and City Express Suites. The Canadian debut follows Marriott’s broader push to grow its midscale segment in North America.

A Highway Hotel With Marriott Bonvoy Reach

City Express by Marriott Port Hope is built around simplicity, consistency and value. Guests have access to refreshed accommodations, complimentary breakfast, high-speed Wi-Fi and fitness facilities. The hotel also offers 24/7 amenities, including a self-service coffee station and The Market Place, which carries snacks, drinks and everyday essentials.

That combination reflects how midscale hotel demand is changing. Travelers want affordable stays, but they increasingly expect reliable design, loyalty program benefits and basic conveniences that reduce friction. By placing City Express inside the Marriott Bonvoy ecosystem, Marriott can target guests who may not need a full-service hotel but still want the reassurance of a recognized global brand.

The property is likely to serve several types of travelers. Some will use it as a stopover on longer drives across Ontario. Others may stay for local business, regional events or short leisure trips tied to Port Hope and nearby destinations. The format also makes sense for families and small groups looking for predictable accommodations without paying resort or urban-center rates.

Port Hope Gets a New Midscale Travel Base

Port Hope gives the hotel a more distinctive setting than a typical highway stop. The community is known for preserved architecture, a historic downtown, arts and culture, seasonal events and its Lake Ontario waterfront. Visitors can explore boutique shopping, the Capitol Theatre and the Ganaraska River, while also using the hotel as a base for Cobourg Beach and Northumberland County’s rolling countryside.

That local context may help the property attract more than pass-through traffic. Ontario travelers increasingly combine small-town stays with outdoor recreation, food, waterfront walks and cultural weekends. A recognizable hotel brand in Port Hope could make those trips easier to plan, especially for guests who prefer loyalty-linked accommodations.

Marriott said the opening reflects the brand’s focus on comfort, convenience, value and trusted hospitality. It also follows the company’s December 2025 signing of 100 agreements for City Express across the United States and Canada, showing that the brand is becoming an important piece of Marriott’s North American growth strategy.

The Port Hope debut suggests Marriott sees room for more branded midscale hotels in secondary destinations and travel corridors. For guests, the result is straightforward: more Bonvoy-connected options in places where convenience, price and reliability matter most.
