France’s highest hotel has reopened in the Pyrenees, offering a night at 2,620 meters with mountain views and a cable-car journey built into the stay. Hôtellerie des Laquets, below the Pic du Midi de Bigorre summit, welcomed guests again on September 25 after a three-decade closure.
The appeal is the setting: a small mountain property where dinner, the changing light and the night sky form the evening’s itinerary. There are 16 rooms, and the operator is seeking four-star classification. That rating is still pending, rather than an award guests should assume has already been granted.
A Historic Hotel Returns Above the Clouds
The regional tourism board’s opening announcement places the revival in a landscape shaped by mountain exploration. Built in the early 1930s, the property is returning to hospitality after a lengthy restoration, with its historic character retained alongside a contemporary extension.
The hotel’s October press release describes two distinct interiors: references to Pyrenean mountaineering culture in the original wing, and restrained Nordic-inspired design in the newer one. A lounge with a fireplace, piano and bar provides an indoor place to enjoy the panorama when the temperature drops.
Accommodation includes 15 double rooms and a premium suite for up to four people, with one double room adapted for guests with reduced mobility. The hotel’s room photos show the different layouts and outlooks, useful when choosing between the historic and newer wings.
The Journey Starts With Two Cable-Car Rides
Guests first travel from La Mongie to the 2,877-meter Pic du Midi summit, then descend to the hotel on its private cable car. The summit and hotel are separate places, so this is not an arrival where a taxi can simply drop passengers at reception.
The operator asks overnight guests to collect their access tickets at La Mongie before 4 p.m. The stay includes access to the summit’s visitor spaces and a planetarium session, making an earlier arrival worth considering rather than treating the ascent purely as a transfer.
What the Starting Price Includes
The advertised double-room package starts at €599 for two, including cable-car travel, Pic du Midi visits, dinner, the overnight stay and breakfast. It is a package starting price, not a guaranteed rate for every date or a room-only comparison with hotels down in the valley.
Dinner is developed by the Pic du Midi team with Stéphane Tournié, the chef of Les Jardins de l’Opéra in Toulouse. His Michelin recognition belongs to that restaurant; it should not be interpreted as a Michelin star awarded to the new hotel’s dining room.
The sauna and hammam are scheduled to become available in December 2026. The official booking page lists private sessions as an extra, with access included in the premium-suite offer from December. Travelers booking an autumn stay should not count on those facilities being open.
Plan Around the Mountain, Not Just the Room
The hotel lies within the Pic du Midi International Dark Sky Reserve. Clear evenings can make stargazing a major attraction, but neither an elevated location nor a dark-sky designation guarantees cloud-free conditions. The operator also distinguishes this hotel stay from its separate, guided overnight astronomy experience at the summit.
Weather can affect access. If conditions prevent a safe arrival, the operator says it will offer another date or a full refund if rescheduling is impossible. Pack warm layers and suitable footwear, and confirm arrival instructions before setting out.
For travelers comparing mountain stays, our Montana resort coverage offers a different take on accommodation built around scenery and stargazing. At Laquets, the small room count and summit transfers make the overnight mountain experience the main reason to book.
