Emirates is pushing Premium Economy closer to the territory traditionally occupied by Business Class with a new electrically powered seat featuring a full-height adjustable privacy screen. The airline says the design is a world first for Premium Economy and will debut on newly delivered Airbus A350 aircraft.
The new cabin has 28 seats arranged in a 2-3-2 configuration. Each seat measures 20 inches wide and offers up to 39 inches of pitch, while a cradle-style recline stays within the passenger’s own space rather than intruding into the row behind.
The most distinctive addition is the electrically operated divider positioned between every seat. Passengers can raise or lower the screen using integrated controls and lock it at their preferred height, creating additional separation while sleeping, dining or working. The seats themselves are also electrically adjustable, another first for Emirates Premium Economy, with preset lounge and meal modes available through a Passenger Control Unit.
Premium Economy Gains More Business-Class Features
Emirates has paired the privacy upgrade with several other improvements designed to make the cabin more competitive on long-haul flights. Safran Seats’ U-Dream leather headrest uses adjustable wings to provide personalized neck and head support, while a manually operated leather footrest is intended to reduce fatigue.
Wireless charging is being added to Premium Economy for the first time, complementing USB-C ports at every seat. Tray tables include integrated phone holders, allowing passengers to position their devices as secondary screens.
The main entertainment display is a 13.3-inch 4K HDR touchscreen running Emirates’ ice inflight entertainment system. Newly delivered A350s will also introduce left- and right-facing exterior cameras, adding new views to the existing forward and downward cameras.
The upgraded seat builds on a Premium Economy service that already includes elements more commonly associated with higher cabins. Meals feature regionally inspired menus served on Royal Doulton china with linen napkins and Robert Welch cutlery, accompanied by a curated wine and beverage program.
From September, selected routes will offer Chablis Premier Cru Jean-Marc Brocard 2024 and La Parde de Haut-Bailly 2014. Emirates will also introduce Wiston Estate Brut NV on UK routes in October, marking the airline’s first English sparkling wine.
Long-haul passengers will receive reusable amenity kits created with United for Wildlife. Made partly from bio-based materials, including cactus leather alternatives, the kits include Aveda skincare products alongside socks, eyeshades, earplugs and dental essentials.
Emirates is also rolling out the U-Dream headrest across existing A350 Economy and Premium Economy cabins, with the airline targeting installation across all of its A350 aircraft by the end of 2026.
The enhancements arrive as Premium Economy becomes an increasingly important middle ground for travelers seeking more space and comfort without paying Business Class fares. Emirates expects its Premium Economy product to serve 99 destinations by the end of 2026, giving the airline a growing platform for a cabin category that is becoming increasingly sophisticated.
With powered controls, greater privacy, upgraded technology and an elevated dining experience, Emirates is making that middle cabin considerably less conventional – and narrowing the gap between Premium Economy and Business Class in the process.
