Day trips are becoming a bigger part of the European vacation itinerary, according to new research from The Tour Guy. The tour operator reported a 110.7% year-over-year increase in day-trip bookings on its platform, alongside a survey showing that 85.4% of respondents opt for excursions beyond their destination city.
For Americans planning a European vacation, the findings highlight an approach that adds variety without requiring another hotel move: use a major city as a base, then spend a day exploring nearby landscapes, historic sites or food traditions. The appeal is often a specific experience, rather than simply escaping urban crowds.
The figures have defined limits. The survey ran September 7-14 among travelers who had visited Europe in the previous 12 months. Booking comparisons cover January 1 through September 15, 2026, against the same period in 2025. The company defines day trips as guided excursions from major European cities to destinations reachable within one day. Its results describe its own business and surveyed travelers, not the entire global excursions market.
Travelers Want More Than a Break From the City
Among respondents, 64.9% cited curiosity about countryside, coastlines and natural landscapes beyond city boundaries. Another 53.4% already had a particular attraction they wanted to visit. Only 8.5% described their motivation as taking a break from the city itself.
That distinction gives tour operators a clearer proposition: sell a reason to go, rather than transportation out of town. The Tour Guy says one in four day trips sold this year came from experiences unavailable on its platform in 2025. Those additions involved familiar destinations presented through new formats.
At Pompeii, one tour combines archaeological interpretation of the ruins with the geology of Mount Vesuvius, using an archaeologist and a volcanologist. In Chianti, an itinerary previously included within a broader Tuscany excursion now focuses entirely on wineries. Both examples make specialist knowledge the central attraction.
The company’s fastest-growing excursions also include recognizable places. Sintra departures from Lisbon and Tuscany village trips from Rome recorded quadruple-digit booking growth, it said, with Mont-Saint-Michel trips from Paris ranking third. Absolute booking totals were not disclosed, limiting comparisons of their scale.
A Wider Opportunity for Destinations and Tour Operators
For destinations, the opportunity extends beyond the gateway city. A visitor staying in an urban hotel can also spend money with regional guides, wineries, restaurants and transport providers. More focused excursions give those businesses a role in the main vacation, rather than leaving them dependent on travelers who book a separate regional stay.
The growth also comes alongside products such as Intrepid’s local day trips in Europe, reflecting operators’ interest in shorter experiences that fit around an existing itinerary. The competitive question becomes what a tour adds through its guides, access or theme.
Leaving a city does not automatically mean avoiding crowds: Pompeii, Sintra and Mont-Saint-Michel are established attractions. The more useful takeaway is that travelers want different ways to experience familiar places. For operators, that favors clear themes and local expertise; for visitors, it opens up a richer itinerary without repacking for every stop.
