Finnair has selected SES to provide satellite Wi-Fi on 18 new Embraer E195-E2 aircraft, extending its connectivity plans to incoming short-haul jets. The airline announced the agreement on November 2, with aircraft deliveries scheduled to begin in the third quarter of 2027 for European services.

The system combines SES geostationary satellites with capacity from Eutelsat’s OneWeb constellation in low Earth orbit. Finnair says using both networks should help maintain a consistent connection in busy areas and during periods of high demand, supporting the service across its network.

SES said the connectivity equipment will be installed during aircraft production at Embraer. An electronically steered antenna will connect each jet to the satellite network, with the first connected aircraft expected to enter service in 2027.

Finnair chief customer officer Simon Large said passengers should be able to stream content, work online and use digital services. Passenger prices and minimum connection speeds were not specified. We recently covered easyJet’s Starlink plans, another European short-haul connectivity rollout starting next year.

For travelers, availability will depend on the aircraft operating their flight as the new jets arrive. Finnair’s announcement provides a delivery window for the fleet, rather than naming the first routes or giving a completion schedule for all 18 aircraft.
