Key Notes
- British Airways has launched three weekly Gatwick–Colombo flights and plans a daily Heathrow–Melbourne route via Kuala Lumpur from January 9, 2027.
- The winter programme adds capacity across 11 long-haul destinations alongside Christmas-market, Lapland and ski services.
- Fuerteventura, Costa Rica and Tampa move to Heathrow, making the London departure airport an important booking detail.
British Airways has launched its expanded winter 2026/27 schedule, led by a new London Gatwick–Colombo service and more capacity across 11 long-haul destinations. The programme also brings additional European flights, Christmas-market services and a planned route to Melbourne via Kuala Lumpur in January.
The changes widen the airline’s winter-sun and city-break options, with some services moving between London airports. For passengers, the departure airport is worth checking as closely as the destination, particularly on routes shifting between Gatwick and Heathrow.
Colombo Opens the Winter Programme
The inaugural Gatwick flight departed on October 23 and landed in Colombo the following day, according to British Airways’ winter announcement. The service operates three times a week through the winter season, giving passengers a nonstop connection to Sri Lanka.
Travellers can choose World Traveller economy, World Traveller Plus premium economy or Club World business class. The seasonal route creates another option for a Sri Lanka itinerary combining the coast with wildlife, cultural sites and inland touring, without requiring a connecting flight en route from London.
Melbourne Joins in January
British Airways plans to begin its new Melbourne service from London Heathrow on January 9, 2027. The daily, year-round route will operate via Kuala Lumpur, as outlined in the airline’s route announcement.
That routing matters when comparing journeys: the service includes a stop in Malaysia. The published timetable distinguishes the first London departure on January 9 from the first Melbourne-origin departure on January 11.
The airline is also adding winter capacity to established long-haul destinations including Cape Town, Tokyo, Bridgetown, Kingston and San José. These changes sit alongside the new routes, giving passengers more options on several existing leisure markets.
Christmas Markets, Lapland and Ski Flights
Europe’s seasonal programme ranges from German Christmas markets to Finnish Lapland and Alpine ski gateways. British Airways’ announced winter frequencies include:
- Cologne: up to five flights a week from Heathrow during December
- Nuremberg: four weekly Heathrow flights during December
- Innsbruck: 16 weekly flights from Gatwick and two from London City
- Rovaniemi: twice-weekly BA Euroflyer flights from Gatwick between December 4 and January 4
- Geneva: up to 110 weekly flights across Heathrow, Gatwick and London City at the ski-season peak
Geneva’s headline figure covers the three London airports together. Rovaniemi is a limited festive-season service, while the airline also points to its existing Gatwick–Ivalo route and a daily Heathrow–Tromsø service for Arctic travel.
Check the London Airport Before Booking
Fuerteventura services move from Gatwick to Heathrow, with two weekly flights planned from mid-December to April. British Airways’ new-routes page also confirms Heathrow replaces Gatwick for Costa Rica and Tampa from October 2026.
Elsewhere, Palermo becomes a year-round destination, Thessaloniki’s season extends into November and March, and Rome, Florence, Gothenburg and Jersey gain frequencies. Cairo receives seven extra weekly flights, taking its announced schedule to three daily services.
Cabin Changes Accompany the Expansion
The airline also expects its first refurbished A380 to join the fleet during the winter. We previously covered the A380 cabin redesign, including its expanded Club Suites business-class cabin. The fleet update is separate from the route-frequency changes; passengers seeking a particular seat should confirm the aircraft and cabin shown for their selected flight.
The winter programme spans new routes, extra frequencies and airport changes, each with different start dates. Checking the operating dates and London departure airport on the booking confirmation will help travellers match the expanded schedule to their plans.
