The Federal Aviation Administration has announced $84.4 million in Airport Improvement Program grants for airports in Texas, North Carolina and Wyoming, funding projects that range from terminal expansion to drainage work and aircraft parking areas.
The largest award highlighted in the September 25 announcement is $40.9 million for San Antonio International Airport. The money will support airfield drainage reconstruction and erosion control, targeting infrastructure that helps the airport manage water and protect its operating areas.
Also in Texas, Abilene Regional Airport will receive $17.5 million for terminal expansion. Wyoming’s Jackson Hole Airport has been allocated $16.6 million for taxiway rehabilitation, while Wilmington International Airport in North Carolina will receive $3 million to expand its apron, the area used for aircraft parking and servicing.
These four highlighted awards total $78 million. The FAA’s release describes them as projects included in the broader $84.4 million round, rather than presenting a complete airport-by-airport breakdown.
Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy said the investments are intended to make aviation infrastructure more reliable and resilient while improving the passenger experience. FAA Administrator Bryan Bedford said the grants would help airports advance essential projects and maintain safe, efficient facilities.
The AIP supports airport infrastructure such as runways, taxiways, signage, lighting and markings. Airports receive entitlement funding based on passenger volume, and the FAA can provide additional discretionary funding when eligible project needs exceed those amounts.
For travelers, the awards represent investment in the facilities behind airport operations, with Abilene’s terminal expansion the clearest passenger-building project among those highlighted. San Antonio has also featured in recent airline network expansion plans. The grant announcement does not provide construction schedules or completion dates, so it does not establish when passengers will see the finished improvements.
