Key Notes

  • Radisson says Hoedspruit is Africa’s first Verified Net Zero hotel.
  • The program combines emissions reductions with credits for residual emissions.
  • The certification concerns an existing hotel rather than a new opening.

Radisson Safari Hotel Hoedspruit has become the first hotel in Africa to enter the group’s Verified Net Zero program, according to an October 27 announcement. The change brings a new environmental credential to an existing South African property near the region’s wildlife attractions.

The useful question for a traveler is what the label covers. Radisson’s program announcement combines renewable electricity and operational emissions reductions with carbon removal credits for the emissions that remain. TÜV Rheinland provides independent verification.

What Changes Behind the Scenes

The group describes a reduction-first approach covering direct emissions, purchased energy and the wider operational supply chain. At Hoedspruit, measures include electrified equipment, lower-carbon menus, wastewater recovery and reduced packaging.

Renewable electricity comes through a combination of on-site generation and procurement arrangements. A solar wheeling agreement is planned from 2027, so that element should be distinguished from measures already in place.

Residual emissions are addressed through credits associated with a South African project. The certification therefore should not be read as a claim that running the hotel produces no emissions at all.

A Base in the Lowveld

The hotel website sits about two kilometers outside Hoedspruit and offers Drakensberg Mountain views. Its setting gives guests a base for exploring the Lowveld, with nature reserves and outdoor activities central to the experience.

Accommodation ranges from standard rooms to suites with private pools. The hotel also lists two swimming pools, a spa, a fitness center, a children’s club and an activity desk, making it an option for travelers who want hotel facilities alongside excursions.

Check-in is listed from 3 p.m. and check-out at 10 a.m. Guests comparing rooms should review the outlook and included services, since a mountain-view category and a private-pool suite offer different experiences.

What the Label Means for a Trip

A hotel’s environmental credential is one part of a holiday decision. Travelers can ask how a property measures its footprint, what reductions it has made and how remaining emissions are treated before comparing it with another stay.

For a safari itinerary, it is also useful to price transfers, activities and any park-related costs separately unless the selected package clearly includes them. The hotel’s certification does not, by itself, establish the impact or inclusions of the rest of the journey.

Making Sustainability Easier to Assess

We recently looked at sustainable travel choices, which showed the gap between interest in sustainability and the choices travelers report making. Detailed hotel information can make that decision more concrete than a broad green claim.

At Hoedspruit, the distinction is between an operating hotel adopting a verified framework and a promise of impact-free travel. Guests still need to compare the certification’s scope with the experience, location and price that suit their own trip.
