Lufthansa Group Is Bringing Free Starlink Wi-Fi to 850 Aircraft by 2029

Lufthansa Group will begin rolling out free Starlink-powered Wi-Fi on August 19, with around 850 aircraft across its airlines scheduled to receive the service by 2029.

Lufthansa Group is starting one of Europe’s largest airline Wi-Fi upgrades, with Starlink-powered high-speed internet set to debut on a Lufthansa Airbus A320neo on August 19.

The project will eventually cover around 850 aircraft across the group’s airlines, with Lufthansa, SWISS, Austrian Airlines and Brussels Airlines among the first carriers scheduled for installation. ITA Airways, Edelweiss, Discover Airlines, Air Dolomiti, Lufthansa City Airlines and Eurowings are also preparing to introduce the technology.

Lufthansa Group plans to complete the fleet-wide rollout by 2029, making Starlink connectivity available across short-haul and long-haul operations.

The system uses low-Earth-orbit satellites to provide significantly faster onboard internet than many traditional aircraft Wi-Fi systems. Lufthansa says passengers will be able to stream video, work with cloud-based applications and use other bandwidth-intensive services that have historically been difficult or unreliable during flights.

For many travelers, the biggest change will be the price.

The new Lufthansa Group Wi-Fi service will be free for Miles & More members and passengers registered with Travel ID, regardless of travel class. That means Economy passengers will have access to the same basic high-speed connectivity as travelers in premium cabins, provided they use one of the group’s customer accounts.

Lufthansa Group Chief Commercial Officer Dieter Vranckx said connectivity is becoming as fundamental to the onboard experience as seats and catering. The group is positioning the upgrade as part of a wider investment program covering aircraft, cabins and services across the travel journey.

There will, however, be rules designed to prevent high-speed connectivity from making cabins noisier or more disruptive.

Passengers using audio or video will be required to wear headphones. Voice calls and video calls will not be permitted, and travelers will also be prohibited from livestreaming from the aircraft. Lufthansa says the guidelines were developed after surveying passengers about how they want high-speed internet to be used onboard.

The Wi-Fi service is being sponsored by Mastercard, which has already worked with Lufthansa Group on its existing FlyNet connectivity product.

Starlink has rapidly become one of the most significant technologies in airline passenger experience, as carriers move away from slow, expensive messaging packages toward connections capable of supporting the same online activities travelers use on the ground.

For Lufthansa Group, the scale of the rollout is especially notable. Equipping around 850 aircraft across multiple airlines, fleet types and operating bases requires a much larger installation program than deploying the system at a single carrier.

If the timetable holds, reliable high-speed internet could become a standard feature across virtually the entire Lufthansa Group network before the end of the decade. The first test for passengers begins August 19, when the initial A320neo takes off with Starlink switched on.
