Celebrity Compass Completes Float-Out Ahead of August 2027 River Debut
Celebrity's first river ship has entered the water and moved to its next shipyard, advancing plans for an August 2027 launch on the Rhine and Danube.
Celebrity Compass, the first ship in Celebrity Cruises‘ new river fleet, has touched water for the first time ahead of its planned August 2027 debut. The float-out moves the vessel into its next construction phase as Celebrity prepares to enter the European river cruise market.
The process began on September 9 at the Zwijnenburg shipyard in Rotterdam, in the Netherlands. Compass then traveled approximately 50 miles to TeamCo Shipyard in Heusden, arriving on September 12. Construction will continue there before the ship welcomes its first passengers.
The milestone marks completion of the ship’s exterior construction, rather than delivery of a finished vessel. Celebrity Cruises President Laura Hodges Bethge described it as a defining step toward bringing the company’s river cruise concept into service.
Compass will operate itineraries on the Rhine and Danube. Celebrity Seeker is also scheduled to join the fleet in 2027, followed by Celebrity Wanderer, Celebrity Roamer and Celebrity Boundless in 2028. The company has outlined plans for 20 European river ships by 2031.
The design draws on Celebrity’s Edge-series ocean ships, carrying familiar hospitality concepts into a smaller river setting. Planned features include open decks with panoramic views, the Magic Edge cantilevered dining area and an infinity-edge plunge pool. Skylight Infinite Balcony suites will introduce overhead natural light as another distinguishing feature.
Celebrity says Compass will offer five stateroom categories and eight restaurants and bars, including the Martini Bar, Sunset Bar and Café Al Bacio. Complimentary breakfast room service and round-the-clock meal options are also planned, extending dining flexibility beyond scheduled restaurant service.
Technical features include a lightweight hull intended to improve river navigation and hybrid propulsion designed to reduce noise and vibration. These remain design objectives as the ship moves through construction toward its inaugural season.
The float-out gives physical form to Celebrity’s previously announced river fleet and onboard experience plans. Its commercial significance extends beyond one vessel: Compass will establish the first operating example of a product the company intends to expand rapidly across Europe’s waterways.
For future guests, the milestone brings the launch closer without changing its planned timing. For the river cruise industry, it advances the arrival of an established ocean brand whose familiar venues and contemporary design could help bring existing Celebrity customers into a different style of cruising.
