TUI says artificial intelligence is no longer an experimental technology inside the company – it is already helping the travel giant cut costs and improve efficiency across major parts of its business.

Speaking alongside TUI’s third-quarter 2026 results, CEO Sebastian Ebel said the company would not have achieved the same financial performance without the contribution from AI. He described the technology as a major change for customer service, pricing, product creation and, increasingly, travel distribution.

TUI reported group revenue of €5.8 billion for the quarter, down from €6.2 billion a year earlier, while underlying EBIT fell by €87 million to €234 million. The results were affected by weaker demand and disruption linked to the war in Iran, making efficiency improvements increasingly important.

AI is playing a central role in TUI’s wider €250 million cost-saving program within its Markets + Airline division. The initiative, announced in late 2025, is designed to deliver roughly one-third of its savings in 2026, another third in 2027 and the full amount by 2028.

About 60% of the planned savings are expected to come from lower overhead costs, with the remainder generated through operational improvements.

Ebel said AI is already changing how technology work is performed inside TUI. Traditional development roles are being reduced or reshaped as the company moves toward employees who manage and supervise AI-powered systems. TUI also believes those tools can accelerate software development significantly while lowering its cost.

Customer-facing operations are another major target. AI can automate parts of customer service, improve yield management and help TUI adjust prices and products more quickly based on demand.

But Ebel sees distribution as potentially the biggest change.

TUI has been building connections with major AI travel platforms and says early conversion rates are encouraging. The company expects more travelers to begin searching for holidays through AI assistants rather than traditional search engines, with those systems directing customers toward travel brands capable of completing the booking.

If that behavior becomes widespread, TUI believes it could reduce the amount it spends acquiring new customers through conventional digital marketing channels.

The strategy gives TUI a different AI story from many travel companies currently launching chatbots and itinerary planners. Instead of focusing primarily on a new consumer-facing assistant, the company is using AI inside its operations, software development, pricing and distribution infrastructure.

That technology can also support businesses such as TUI Musement, which sits inside the group’s broader ecosystem of tours, activities and destination services.

The financial impact is still developing, but TUI’s message is unusually clear: AI is already affecting the cost base today, not simply promising savings several years from now.

For one of Europe’s largest tourism groups, that may ultimately be more important than any single AI-powered travel planning feature.
