Nobu Hospitality will make its Puerto Rico debut in 2028 with the opening of Nobu Hotel and Restaurant San Juan, a 50-room luxury property that will combine the brand’s Japanese-influenced hospitality model with the character of the island’s capital.
The hotel is being developed in partnership with real estate firm KTT and will include a signature Nobu restaurant and bar at street level, along with a rooftop lounge and bar. The project is designed as an intimate urban property rather than a large resort, giving Nobu a smaller-format entry into one of the Caribbean’s best-known historic and cultural destinations.
Nobu said the hotel will reflect the heritage and architecture of San Juan while bringing in the contemporary aesthetic and understated luxury that define its global portfolio. Guest rooms are expected to emphasize calm, refined design, while service will draw on the Japanese concept of omotenashi. Dining will remain central to the experience, continuing the restaurant-led identity that helped establish Nobu before the company expanded into hotels.
The brand was founded around chef Nobu Matsuhisa’s restaurant concept, with Robert De Niro and Meir Teper among its partners. Nobu entered the hotel business in 2009 and has since grown to 20 hotels worldwide, with nearly 30 additional projects in development. The San Juan opening will add Puerto Rico to that pipeline alongside future properties in destinations including New York, Bangkok and Rutland in England.
The announcement adds another high-end project to a regional hotel market that continues to attract international brands and investors. TravelCapybara has tracked the broader expansion of major hotel groups across the Caribbean and Latin America, where luxury, lifestyle and resort brands are competing for travelers seeking both beach access and culturally distinctive city stays.
San Juan gives Nobu access to a destination with a mix of historic architecture, waterfront neighborhoods, galleries, restaurants and established tourism infrastructure. Puerto Rico also benefits from strong air connectivity to the mainland United States, with carriers continuing to add service to the island. JetBlue, for example, has expanded its San Juan network with additional year-round routes.
For Nobu, the project extends a strategy built around pairing destination-driven design with signature food and beverage. The company has emphasized Puerto Rico’s history, culture and hospitality as key reasons for entering the market, while KTT has positioned the development as an investment in San Juan’s continued growth. For the city, the 2028 opening will add another internationally recognized luxury name to its hospitality market and strengthen its position within the region’s upscale urban hotel segment.
