Lyft App Expands in Europe for North American Travelers
North American Lyft users can keep their existing app, account and payment methods as European access starts in Barcelona and Hamburg and expands through October.
North American travelers can start using the Lyft app in Europe, beginning with early access in Barcelona and Hamburg. The expansion lets existing customers keep their account and saved payment methods when crossing the Atlantic, reducing the need to set up another ride-booking app after arrival.
Lyft’s September 30 announcement sets out a phased rollout through October. For travelers, the key planning detail is the city-by-city schedule: access is starting in two markets and will broaden over the following weeks.
Barcelona and Hamburg Come First
London, Rome, Paris, Berlin, Athens and Warsaw are among the cities scheduled to follow during October. The rollout also includes markets in Ireland and Austria, with Lyft targeting wider access across its European footprint by the end of the month.
Anyone building a multi-city itinerary should check availability for each stop. An app working for the first leg of a trip does not establish coverage for every later destination, surrounding town or airport. Keeping another local booking option available is sensible while the rollout progresses.
Freenow Provides the European Foundation
The expansion builds on Lyft’s Freenow acquisition, completed in July 2025. At that stage, Lyft customers opening their app in Freenow’s European markets were directed to download Freenow. Bringing booking into their existing app removes that extra step as the new access becomes available.
The underlying European network has also grown. In a September progress update, Lyft said Freenow operated in more than 200 cities across nine countries, having added 11 destinations in Greece and seven markets in Spain over the previous year.
Those additions included Gran Canaria and the Marina Baixa area around Benidorm, alongside Greek destinations such as Zakynthos and Andros. They show how the wider taxi network reaches beyond major capitals. However, Freenow’s full operating map should not be treated as confirmation that every location already supports booking directly through Lyft.
Existing European customers can continue using Freenow by Lyft and Gett by Lyft. The new announcement is specifically aimed at making European travel simpler for North American Lyft users.
Saved Payments Carry Over, Currency Choice Comes Later
Customers can use their existing payment methods. A choice between paying in their home currency and the local currency is planned for the following year; it is not a feature travelers should assume is available at launch.
Before confirming a ride, check the currency shown, the price information and the selected vehicle option. Business travelers should also check how receipts and expense reporting work for the booking they make. A familiar app is useful, but the details of each trip still deserve attention.
Airport Pickups Still Need Local Planning
Freenow’s pickup guidance explains that airport meeting points depend on the airport and terminal selected. In Freenow, passengers can view directions after choosing those details. That guidance is useful when using the local app, while Lyft users should follow the instructions shown for their own booking.
Fare structures can differ between vehicle types, too. Freenow’s UK service guide lists metered fares for Black Cabs and fixed fares for its private-hire Ride option. Travelers visiting London should check which service they are choosing, along with passenger capacity and pickup details.
We have also covered Uber’s Madrid plans, another example of how European ground transport is evolving. For this Lyft rollout, the immediate benefit is practical: one less account to organize before departure, provided the destination has joined the rollout and the available service suits the journey.
