Guggenheim Abu Dhabi will officially open on December 11, 2026, ending nearly two decades of anticipation around one of the most ambitious museum projects in the Middle East.

First announced in 2006, the museum will become part of the Solomon R. Guggenheim Foundation’s international network alongside institutions in New York, Venice and Bilbao. It will also become a centerpiece of Saadiyat Cultural District, reinforcing Abu Dhabi’s strategy of using major cultural institutions to build its global tourism profile.

Designed by the late architect Frank Gehry, Guggenheim Abu Dhabi will span approximately 80,000 square meters of total built space. Inside, 30 galleries will provide around 11,600 square meters of exhibition space, while another 23,000 square meters will be dedicated to outdoor exhibitions.

The building is organized around a central atrium and a group of ten sculptural cones rising as high as 88 meters. Nine will be covered in stainless steel mesh and one in onyx and glass. The structures are intended to provide shade and natural ventilation while giving the museum a dramatic silhouette on the waterfront.

A Different Kind of Guggenheim Collection

The museum will focus on modern and contemporary art from the 1960s to the present, with a collection that aims to broaden the traditional Western-centered narrative of contemporary art.

Works from West Asia, North Africa, South Asia and other regions will sit alongside pieces from Europe, the Americas and elsewhere. Instead of organizing galleries strictly by date or geography, curators plan to build connections around themes including abstraction, popular culture, land, language and storytelling.

The collection has been developing since 2009 and will span painting, sculpture, photography, installations, moving image and new media.

The Department of Culture and Tourism – Abu Dhabi is responsible for the development and operation of the museum, while the Solomon R. Guggenheim Foundation is the project’s long-term cultural partner.

Saadiyat Island Is Becoming a Global Museum District

Guggenheim Abu Dhabi is arriving in a part of the city already transformed by cultural investment.

Saadiyat Cultural District includes Louvre Abu Dhabi, Zayed National Museum, Natural History Museum Abu Dhabi and teamLab Phenomena Abu Dhabi. Together, these institutions are creating one of the highest concentrations of major new museums anywhere in the world.

That concentration matters for tourism. Travelers who previously treated museums as one part of an Abu Dhabi itinerary will increasingly be able to build an entire trip around Saadiyat Island’s cultural attractions.

The Guggenheim also gives Abu Dhabi another globally recognizable architectural landmark. Gehry previously transformed perceptions of Bilbao with the Guggenheim Museum that opened there in 1997, helping popularize the idea that a major cultural building could itself become a tourism destination.

Abu Dhabi is pursuing that effect on a much larger scale, combining several international museum brands with local institutions, beaches, resorts and residential development.

After 20 years of delays and anticipation, the question surrounding Guggenheim Abu Dhabi is finally changing. Travelers no longer need to ask whether the museum will open. From December 11, they will be able to see whether one of the world’s longest-awaited cultural projects can reshape Abu Dhabi’s place on the global art and travel map.
