Etihad Rail has completed its first passenger station in Fujairah, bringing the UAE closer to the launch of intercity passenger rail services later this year. The Fujairah Passenger Station, located in the Madinat Al Hilal area of the emirate, covers 51,900 square meters and will be one of the first three stations to open as part of the network’s initial passenger phase.

The first services are expected to connect Abu Dhabi, Dubai and Fujairah, creating a new transport option between the UAE’s east coast and its main urban centers. Etihad Rail has said passengers can expect travel times of about 57 minutes between Abu Dhabi and Dubai, 69 minutes between Dubai and Fujairah, and 105 minutes between Abu Dhabi and Fujairah. Trains are expected to operate at speeds of up to 200 kilometers per hour and carry around 400 passengers.

The Fujairah station is strategically placed near several transport, tourism and heritage assets. It is about 12 minutes from Fujairah International Airport, six minutes from Umbrella Beach Corniche and five minutes from Sakamkam Fort. Its location also places it near the port and a wider area expected to develop into a major residential district.

Fujairah Moves Into the Rail Spotlight

The completion of the Fujairah station gives the emirate a central role in the UAE’s first passenger rail phase. Fujairah is already known for its mountains, beaches, diving, fortresses and east-coast scenery, but passenger rail could change how residents and visitors think about access to the emirate.

By reducing travel times from Abu Dhabi and Dubai, Etihad Rail could support domestic tourism, weekend trips and new investment in hospitality, real estate, education, healthcare and cultural projects. Easier access may also encourage more UAE residents to visit Fujairah without relying on long car journeys, especially during peak holiday periods or busy weekends.

The station itself has been designed for simple passenger movement. It includes ticket machines, digital information boards, wall maps, directional signage, waiting areas, passenger service offices and automated payment machines. Retail and food-and-beverage spaces are also planned, while passengers will move through automatic gates and upstairs toward platforms and trains.

Onboard services are expected to include Wi-Fi, power outlets, overhead storage, generous legroom and dining carriages. Ticketing will be available through a website, a forthcoming app and stations, with prices to be announced later.

Rail Infrastructure Becomes a Tourism Asset

Etihad Rail’s passenger launch is not only a transport project. It is part of the UAE’s broader infrastructure strategy, designed to improve mobility, strengthen supply chains and support economic diversification. The freight network is already operating, and officials have highlighted its recent importance in moving goods efficiently across the country.

The passenger service could also reshape travel behavior inside the UAE. For tourists, rail can make multi-emirate itineraries easier, especially when paired with airports, hotels and destination attractions. For residents, it offers a potential alternative to driving between major cities and coastal destinations.

Local sourcing has also been emphasized in the development of the network. Etihad Rail said around 70% of materials used in the national railway network were sourced locally, supported by 97 domestic suppliers. That gives the project an industrial and economic dimension beyond transport alone.

The wider passenger network is expected to expand in phases, with 11 stations announced across the country. For now, the completion of Fujairah Passenger Station is the clearest sign that the UAE’s long-planned rail future is becoming visible. If the first phase runs smoothly, Etihad Rail could become one of the country’s most important tools for connecting tourism, business and everyday mobility.
