The U.S. government has launched America.gov, an AI-powered portal designed to simplify access to federal information and services, with first-time passport applications expected to become fully available online in 2027.
The new platform is intended to give users a single entry point to thousands of federal resources instead of requiring them to navigate separate agency websites. For travelers in the United States, one of the most significant planned changes is the ability to complete a first passport application from home.
Secretary of State Marco Rubio said applicants will eventually be able to use America.gov and Login.gov to access information already held by the government, complete the application process, submit a passport photo and avoid a separate visit to a post office, public library or other acceptance facility. The shift would extend digital passport services beyond renewals, which are already available online to eligible U.S. citizens.
For now, current State Department rules remain unchanged. Adults applying for their first passport must still submit an application in person at an authorized acceptance facility. America.gov currently functions primarily as a conversational government-information service, while additional transactional features are scheduled to roll out as agencies integrate with the platform.
The project reflects a broader move toward digital identity and automated travel-document services. TravelCapybara has previously covered how Apple Digital ID is changing identity checks at U.S. airports, while passport strength and access remain central to global mobility, as highlighted in the 2026 Henley Passport Index.
Rubio also announced a redesigned U.S. passport called “Flight of the Eagle,” scheduled to begin appearing in 2028. The new design is expected to feature an eagle-centered visual identity and updated interior artwork.
If the online first-time application system launches as planned, it would remove several of the most time-consuming steps from getting a U.S. passport and mark a significant expansion of digital government services with direct implications for travelers.
