Smithsonian Journeys will launch Discover Getaways, a new collection of shorter guided trips designed for travelers who want a more manageable time commitment. The initial lineup includes 11 itineraries that will begin operating next year, with trips ranging from seven to nine days. Departures are scheduled over weekends to reduce the number of vacation days travelers need to use, and bookings are already open.

The new collection will cover destinations including France, the Galapagos, Italy, Japan, Malta, Morocco, Turkiye, Switzerland, Alaska, and Jordan. Smithsonian Journeys said the itineraries were developed for travelers with busier schedules, particularly Gen X, and are intended to offer a balanced pace rather than an overloaded sightseeing program. All trips will include a Smithsonian Journeys expert, while pricing covers air, taxes, and fees.

The launch shows how guided tour operators are adjusting products as the Boomer customer base ages and the industry looks for new sources of demand. Shorter itineraries can help attract travelers who want premium, expert-led experiences but cannot commit to longer vacations. For Smithsonian Journeys, the format may also create repeat booking potential by encouraging travelers to take multiple shorter trips rather than one extended tour.
