A bankruptcy court hearing on Google’s proposed $10 million purchase of Spirit Airlines’ internal data has been postponed to November 6 from October 14. Travel Weekly reported the revised schedule on October 9, citing a notice filed by Spirit’s attorneys.

The delay follows an October 8 congressional letter signed by 121 lawmakers seeking stronger employee privacy safeguards. The proposed dataset includes about 100 million emails, 500 million Microsoft Teams messages and employment records. Lawmakers warned that removing names and other direct identifiers might still leave workers identifiable through connections across records.

Google says it wants the data to improve its products and AI models, and that an independent third party will remove personally identifiable information before any transfer. Passenger name records, ticket sales, inflight purchases, Wi-Fi sales and refund-system data are among the consumer records excluded from the proposed sale.

Lawmakers want employee training records, timecards, payroll information and Microsoft 365 content containing flight-attendant information excluded at a minimum. They also seek an independent confidentiality review and enforceable limits on subsequent use. The Association of Flight Attendants-CWA has backed the demands.

We previously covered Google’s $10 million bid and Spirit’s shutdown in May. The latest postponement leaves the proposed transfer awaiting court review, with the dispute centred on how former employees’ information would be protected if the transaction proceeds.
