American Airlines has opened nine new gates at Dallas Fort Worth International Airport, marking a key milestone in the multibillion-dollar modernization of its largest hub. The new gates are part of the Terminal C pier expansion and give passengers an early look at how the airline plans to reshape one of the busiest terminals in the United States.
The new pier includes electronic boarding gates designed to guide passengers more smoothly through the boarding process. American says the technology uses proprietary infrastructure and will make the airline the first major U.S. network carrier to launch electronic boarding gates at scale at a major hub. The gates also come with updated seating, new restrooms, concessions and a brighter terminal environment with high ceilings and energy-efficient windows.
The project delivers four net-new gates and five rebuilt gates, adding capacity while modernizing an older section of the airport. Terminal C is one of DFW’s original terminals and is now more than 50 years old. It is also American’s busiest terminal at the airport, averaging nearly 200 mainline departures per day during the current summer schedule.
The pier expansion was built over two years using modular construction, a method intended to reduce disruption to airport operations and speed up delivery. Several structures were partly built away from the terminal area before being moved into place, allowing the airport and airline to expand capacity while maintaining a major live operation.
The opening is only the first visible step in a much larger rebuild. American and DFW are planning a full reconstruction of Terminal C over the next several years, with new check-in areas, security facilities, baggage handling systems, restaurants, retail spaces, restrooms, art installations and parking improvements. Once complete, Terminal C is expected to include 32 gates and more than 1 million square feet of facilities.
The investment reflects the central role DFW plays in American’s global network. The airline handled more than 67 million customers at the airport in 2025 and is operating up to 930 daily departures from DFW this summer. The hub offers nonstop access to more than 230 destinations and supports around 30,000 American team members.
American is also expanding elsewhere at the airport. A similar pier-style expansion is underway at Terminal A, which is expected to open later this year with 10 gates. The first phase of Terminal F, American’s sixth terminal at DFW, is scheduled to open next year with 31 gates served by the airline.
The gate opening also comes alongside operational changes intended to make DFW more efficient. American recently shifted its schedule from nine to 13 daily banks, spreading flights more evenly throughout the day. The airline says the change has improved on-time performance, customer connections and baggage handling.
For passengers, the new gates should mean more space, better flow and a more modern boarding experience. For American, they represent the beginning of a larger airport transformation designed to support long-term growth in North Texas.
