Traveling with babies or toddlers can turn even a short getaway into a logistical challenge. Long airport transfers, difficult public transport systems and overcrowded attractions often make city trips stressful for parents with young children.

To help families plan easier trips, travel booking platform LateRooms has created a new “Family Breaks Index,” a data-driven ranking that identifies the easiest European city breaks for families with babies, toddlers and young children. The index analyzes practical factors that matter most for family travel, including flight times from UK airports, airport transfer times, walkability, accessibility, the number of child-friendly attractions and the availability of family-friendly accommodation.

The results highlight cities where navigating the destination is simple, travel times are manageable and children can easily find engaging activities. The ranking is particularly useful for parents planning short city breaks, first flights with toddlers or relaxed weekend trips that balance sightseeing with family-friendly experiences.

According to the index, Copenhagen ranks as the easiest and most enjoyable family city break overall. Denmark’s capital combines short travel times, efficient public transport and excellent walkability, allowing families to move around the city without complicated logistics. Flights from the UK typically take less than two hours, while the metro connection from Copenhagen Airport to the city center takes around 15 minutes.

Once in the city, many attractions are easily reachable on foot. Copenhagen scored 99 out of 100 for walkability, making it one of Europe’s most accessible urban destinations for travelers with strollers or young children. Popular family attractions include Tivoli Gardens amusement park, which famously inspired Disneyland, and the colorful Nyhavn harbor area, where families can stroll along the waterfront.

Cities Where Family Travel Is Easier

Berlin ranks second in the Family Breaks Index thanks to the large number of attractions suitable for families. The German capital offers more than 200 child-friendly activities, including the Berlin Zoo, interactive museums such as the Deutsches Technikmuseum and large green spaces like Tiergarten park. Wide sidewalks and well-developed public transport infrastructure also make it easier to navigate the city with children.

Barcelona takes third place, offering a combination of cultural attractions and outdoor experiences. Families can explore landmarks such as the Sagrada Família or Gaudí’s Park Güell while also enjoying open-air spaces like Barceloneta Beach and the city’s many plazas and playgrounds.

Other cities in the ranking stand out for different reasons. Florence is highlighted as a strong destination for families interested in culture and history, thanks to its compact layout and interactive museums like the Leonardo da Vinci Museum. Amsterdam performs well due to its short travel times and easy airport connections, making it particularly suitable for quick family trips.

Valencia stands out for its range of activities, including the City of Arts and Sciences complex and the expansive Turia Gardens park that runs through the city center. Smaller destinations also feature in the ranking, including Basel, which benefits from a compact layout and strong accessibility for travelers with strollers.

Central European cities such as Kraków and Prague are also included thanks to their walkable historic centers and wide range of attractions, while Vienna rounds out the top ten with its combination of cultural landmarks, museums and family-friendly attractions such as the Prater amusement park.

As families increasingly look for short, manageable city breaks rather than long-haul trips, destinations that combine accessibility, efficient transport and engaging attractions are becoming more appealing for travelers with young children.
