Wizz Air is pushing deeper into digital transformation with the launch of a new integrated cabin ecosystem designed to reshape the onboard experience in a low-cost environment. Developed in partnership with Immfly and gateretail, the platform brings together passenger services, onboard retail, crew operations, and real-time data into a single system, signaling a broader shift in how budget airlines approach both customer experience and ancillary revenue.

The rollout includes two core components: a fleetwide deployment of Bluetooth-enabled in-seat ordering and a six-month connectivity trial across selected aircraft. Together, these initiatives aim to give passengers more control over their journey while improving operational efficiency behind the scenes.

At the center of the strategy is the introduction of Bluetooth-based ordering across Wizz Air’s fleet of more than 260 Airbus A320 and A321 aircraft. Passengers who download the airline’s mobile app before their flight can browse and purchase food, drinks, and retail products directly from their personal devices without requiring an internet connection. Orders are transmitted via Bluetooth to cabin crew, allowing for faster fulfillment, improved accuracy, and reduced reliance on traditional trolley service.

The system is designed to streamline onboard service while increasing retail engagement. By enabling passengers to order at any time during the flight, Wizz Air can potentially boost ancillary revenue while reducing pressure on crew workflows. The integration with gateretail’s platform further enhances product visibility and sales tracking, while Immfly’s backend infrastructure supports real-time data processing and operational insights.

Testing Connectivity in a Low-Cost Model

Alongside the ordering rollout, Wizz Air is testing limited onboard connectivity through a six-month trial on five UK-based aircraft. Powered by Immfly’s Equilux system and satellite infrastructure, the trial introduces a range of new digital services without committing to full-scale inflight Wi-Fi.

Passengers on these aircraft will be able to access wireless entertainment purchases, including movies, TV content, music, and games, as well as messaging services such as WhatsApp. The system also enables live payment authorization, helping reduce failed transactions and improving the reliability of onboard purchases. Additional features include real-time flight information and destination content, creating a more connected and informative travel experience.

Beyond passenger-facing features, the ecosystem also supports operational improvements. Cockpit integration allows for real-time data sharing, enabling better route planning and fuel optimization. For the airline, this adds a layer of efficiency that goes beyond customer experience and into core operational performance.

The move reflects a broader trend in the airline industry, where even low-cost carriers are investing in digital infrastructure to enhance both service and profitability. Rather than adopting full-scale connectivity solutions, Wizz Air is taking a more targeted approach, focusing on technologies that can deliver immediate value while remaining scalable.

As competition intensifies across Europe’s budget airline market, the ability to combine low fares with a more flexible, tech-enabled experience may become a key differentiator. Wizz Air’s latest initiative suggests that the future of low-cost travel will be shaped not just by price, but by how seamlessly airlines can integrate digital tools into every stage of the journey.
