Southwest Airlines will discontinue flights from Chicago O’Hare International Airport and Washington Dulles International Airport beginning June 4 as part of the airline’s ongoing effort to streamline its network.

The carrier said the decision is aimed at concentrating operations at airports where it already maintains stronger route networks. Despite the exits, Southwest emphasized that travelers in both metropolitan areas will continue to have extensive flight options through nearby airports.

In Chicago, Southwest’s main hub will remain Chicago Midway International Airport. According to flight schedule data from Cirium, the airline operates about 76 routes from Midway this month, compared with just 11 routes from O’Hare. Southwest only began serving O’Hare in February 2021 during the pandemic when it temporarily expanded to several new airports.

In the Washington region, Southwest will continue operating flights from Baltimore/Washington International Airport and Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport. Baltimore remains one of the airline’s largest stations with about 75 routes, while Reagan National currently hosts 18 Southwest routes.

Operations at Washington Dulles have been relatively limited, consisting of only two routes to Denver and Phoenix. The airline said shifting flights away from Dulles allows it to focus on nearby airports where demand and connectivity are stronger.

O’Hare was one of 18 airports Southwest entered during the pandemic, and it will become the fourth of those locations the airline has exited. In August 2024, Southwest also withdrew from Houston Bush Intercontinental Airport, Syracuse in New York, and Bellingham in Washington state.

The airline has been adjusting its route network in recent years to remove less profitable flying while strengthening key markets and adding new destinations. Southwest has also introduced routes to several new cities, including St. Maarten and St. Thomas in the Caribbean.
