Alaska Airlines and Hawaiian Airlines are making it easier for surfers to travel with their boards, unveiling a new surfboard policy that’s being called the most generous among premium U.S. carriers.
The policy allows passengers to check multiple surfboards in a single bag measuring up to 10 feet, 5 inches long and weighing up to 50 pounds, treated as standard checked baggage with no special item fees. Travelers flying on regional E175 aircraft are limited to bags up to 9 feet, 7 inches.
For members of the airlines’ branded credit card programs and the new Atmos Royalty loyalty program, existing baggage allowances apply – meaning potential savings for frequent travelers. Hawaiian residents flying interisland through the Huaka‘i by Hawaiian program can check one surfboard bag for free.
The airlines say the updated policy aims to support travelers heading to top surf destinations across the globe, including Tahiti, Mexico, Costa Rica, Australia, American Samoa, the Cook Islands, Japan, and New Zealand. The move underscores both carriers’ shared commitment to leisure travel and active lifestyles central to their Pacific roots.
