Iceland’s wild southern coastline is getting a striking new addition this winter with the debut of the Black Sand Hotel, a boutique, oceanfront retreat designed to blend modern comfort with the raw volcanic landscape surrounding it.
Scheduled to open in January with 70 guestrooms, the property will expand further in March with nine suites, followed by a full spa opening in May. With its dramatic location on a peninsula in the Ölfus region, the hotel is being positioned as Iceland’s first true beachfront boutique escape and aims to set a new standard for coastal hospitality in the country.
The design approach throughout the property focuses on calm, minimalist aesthetics that echo the region’s natural elements. Guestrooms incorporate neutral color palettes, natural materials, and clean lines, while floor-to-ceiling windows frame sweeping views of the North Atlantic, black volcanic sands, the Ölfusá River, and nearby mountains.
These wide-open vistas serve as the focal point of each room, creating a strong connection between guests and the dramatic environment just outside. The Black Sand Hotel will also become Iceland’s first fully furnished DUX hotel, featuring bespoke furniture from the Swedish luxury brand across guestrooms, public spaces, and the restaurant.
Dining will be centered around ÓMUR, an 80-seat restaurant celebrating Nordic flavors and ingredients sourced from Iceland’s land and sea. The restaurant will serve a daily breakfast buffet along with a refined dinner menu rooted in regional culinary traditions. Adjacent to it, the ÓMUR Bar will offer craft cocktails and seasonal small plates in an intimate setting.
Musical influences will also play a subtle role in the dining and lounge experience, inspired by the ambient, nature-driven compositions of Icelandic multi-instrumentalist Ólafur Arnalds.
One of the most anticipated features of the new hotel is its wellness offering. Opening in May, the spa will overlook the black sands and feature a sauna, steam room, cold plunge, geothermal hot tubs, and a dedicated treatment room.
Skincare formulas from the sustainable brand Comfort Zone will be used throughout the spa menu. A yoga room will provide additional space for relaxation, and guests can request in-room gym kits equipped with fitness essentials. These features reflect the hotel’s intention to be a peaceful retreat where visitors can unwind while taking in the dramatic landscapes.
To celebrate its debut, the Black Sand Hotel is offering opening rates starting at $210 per night for stays through April, inclusive of breakfast, taxes, and fees. Positioned at the intersection of nature, design, and tranquility, the hotel is set to become one of Iceland’s most compelling new getaways for travelers seeking coastal serenity paired with thoughtful luxury.
