United Airlines has launched advance meal purchasing for passengers flying in the economy cabin, marking a significant step toward a new inflight dining model. The option allows travelers to pre-order meals through the airline’s app or website from five days up to 24 hours before departure, giving customers greater certainty about food availability onboard.

The initiative is part of a broader plan that will take effect on March 1, when United expects most economy passengers on domestic and short-haul international routes to purchase meals in advance rather than onboard. United already sells meals on longer routes within the United States and on flights to destinations including Canada, Mexico, the Caribbean, Hawaii, and parts of Latin America, but the expanded pre-order system standardizes the process across more flights.

From a travel experience perspective, the change reflects airlines’ growing focus on predictability and efficiency. United says advance-only ordering will help catering partners better manage inventory, reduce last-minute shortages, and ensure passengers get their preferred meals. The airline estimates the shift could keep more than 100,000 pounds of unused food out of landfills each year, aligning the policy with sustainability goals.

For travelers, the menu includes items such as breakfast sandwiches, burgers, tacos, and lighter options like hummus platters, with selections varying by route and time of day. United also plans to introduce additional meal choices, including salads and wraps, later this year. Snack boxes, packaged snacks, and beverages will still be available for purchase onboard, alongside complimentary snacks and soft drinks.
