A powerful eruption of the Hayli Gubbi volcano in Ethiopia – the first in more than a decade – has triggered major air travel disruptions across India.

The drifting ash cloud reached Indian airspace, prompting carriers including IndiGo and Akasa Air to cancel or delay flights along affected corridors. Aviation authorities warned that volcanic ash poses severe risks to aircraft engines and visibility, forcing operators to reroute planes and reduce exposure to hazardous areas.

India’s Directorate General of Civil Aviation has instructed all airlines to revise flight plans, adjust fuel loads, and avoid specific altitudes where ash concentration is highest. Several international and domestic services experienced extended delays, and additional cancellations are expected as conditions evolve.

Passengers traveling in the coming days have been advised to check updated schedules and prepare for operational changes.

The eruption has also raised concerns about prolonged impacts on regional air traffic if ash emissions continue. With safety as the top priority, airlines remain in close coordination with meteorological and aviation authorities while monitoring the ash cloud’s movement.
