Emirates has significantly expanded its long-term fleet plans with an order for 65 additional Boeing 777-9 widebody aircraft. Announced during the opening day of the Dubai Air Show, the deal raises the airline’s total 777X commitments to 270 aircraft scheduled for delivery through 2038.
The 777-9, along with the smaller 777-8 variant, represents Boeing’s next-generation twin-engine flagship, featuring a wider cabin, extended range and improved fuel efficiency over earlier 777 models.
The aircraft’s entry into service has faced repeated delays. Originally expected in 2020, Boeing now targets 2026 for the first delivery as flight-test certification continues. Boeing CEO Kelly Ortberg said the program has surpassed 4,000 test-flight hours and noted no major technical obstacles remain.
Emirates, the world’s largest operator of the 777, currently flies 119 777-300ERs and 10 777-200LRs. The expanded 777-9 order underscores the airline’s confidence in the aircraft’s long-term role as the backbone of its global fleet.
