Frankfurt’s luxury hotel landscape has gained a significant new address with the opening of The Florentin, a five-star property set in the city’s Sachsenhausen district just south of the Main River.

Formerly known as Villa Kennedy, the landmark building closed in 2022 and has now reopened with a new identity, fewer but larger rooms, and a design concept centered on understated elegance.

Managed by Germany’s Althoff Hotels, The Florentin is part of the Althoff Collection and a member of The Leading Hotels of the World. The repositioning aims to elevate the property beyond its previous incarnation, blending heritage architecture with contemporary interiors and expanded wellness and culinary offerings.

A 1901 Villa Reimagined

At the heart of the hotel stands a restored 1901 villa originally built for the Speyer banking family. The historic mansion anchors the complex, facing a central Garden Courtyard that has become a defining feature of the property. While the villa’s façade reflects post-war restoration, much of its architectural character remains intact, offering a sense of continuity with Frankfurt’s past.

The original mansion now houses several public areas, event spaces, and nine signature suites, each designed to reflect themes tied to Frankfurt’s cultural history. The largest, a three-bedroom Royal Suite, includes a kitchen, private sauna, and dedicated workout room. Across the wider property, The Florentin offers 147 rooms and suites in total, including 40 suites. Many overlook the landscaped courtyard, which introduces greenery and natural light into the center of the hotel.

The interiors emphasize what the management describes as “quiet luxury,” with muted color palettes, clean lines, and high-quality materials. In contrast, some of the villa’s public rooms feature more expressive decor intended to honor the building’s historical character.

Dining, Wellness, and a Leisure Push

The Florentin positions itself as both a business and leisure property in a city long known for its financial sector. Its location in Sachsenhausen places it within walking distance of the Museumsufer riverfront district, home to roughly 10 museums, and a short drive from Frankfurt’s reconstructed New Old Town.

Dining plays a central role in the hotel’s identity. The Garden restaurant and Florentin Bar open onto the courtyard and provide all-day options, while the fine-dining venue “the dune” operates as a destination restaurant. Led by Michelin-starred chef Niclas Nussbaumer, the concept features a fixed-price tasting menu with inventive combinations, alongside an à la carte option.

Wellness facilities include five treatment rooms, saunas, steam baths, a spa garden, a 46-foot indoor pool, and a 24-hour fitness center. The hotel also recommends VIP airport services at Frankfurt Airport for guests seeking expedited arrivals and departures.

With nightly rates positioned at the upper end of Frankfurt’s market, The Florentin is clearly targeting high-end travelers seeking privacy, culinary distinction, and architectural character. Its debut signals a broader effort to reinforce Frankfurt’s appeal as not only a global financial hub but also a refined urban destination for leisure travelers exploring Germany.
